St. Mary's University is committed to the development of the whole person. The Residence Life staff is a combination of students and professionals who have been trained to encourage and help provide a community environment in which a university student can grow and develop personally and academically.

Living on campus provides many opportunities to discover and develop one's own gifts and talents. The Office of Residence Life works with residents to cultivate these gifts and talents into life skills. Residents will face challenges of personal responsibility as they mature into independent adults. Embracing the University's academic endeavor to create students who are intellectual critical thinkers, the residence halls provide a challenging, yet supportive environment for the residents' development and growth.

Hall Directors

The Hall Director, or HD, is a full time professional with at least a Bachelor's degree who lives on campus and supervises Resident Assistants and student staff. The HD trains the student staff, provides overall direction for a residential area, and keeps office hours for advising and meeting with individual students and groups.

The Graduate Hall Director, or GHD, is a part time staff member enrolled in graduate studies, whose role is similar to that of a HD.

Resident Assistants and STARS

Resident Assistants (RAs)

RAs are student staff members that live in the residence halls with the students. Their primary duty is to assistant students and foster and develop community on their floor and in their hall. They can provide assistance when students are ill, mediate roommate conflicts, arrange for maintenance repairs, refer students to offices on campus, and keep students informed about various events on campus and in the community. RAs also organize programs and activities in the building and on their floor in a variety of domains including physical, emotional, social, intellectual, vocational, cultural, and spiritual.

An RA is on duty in each residential area from 7 p.m. each night to 7 a.m. each morning while school is in session, including short break periods. Additionally, an RA will be at the front desk and/or Hall Office each night from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

STARS (Students Together Academically Reaching Success)

RAs in Dougherty are aided by STARS, who are undergraduate residents who have been selected and trained to address the needs of first year students. Two STARS are assigned to Founders, one to each floor.

As a prospective staff member, it is important for you to understand the criterion that will serve as the foundation of our candidate evaluation process. These standards will also help facilitate your understanding of what constitutes a productive and successful paraprofessional staff member (R.A./S.T.A.R.S.) of the Residence Life department. Although these standards are related to the position requirements and description, they are not meant to take its place. They are simply offered to you as a way of presenting the personal qualities we believe candidates should bring to the selection process and to the position. We encourage you to reflect upon these requirements and determine how you specifically may contribute to the development of the St. Mary's residential community.
