Housing Frequently Asked Questions




What can I do if my housing assignment is not the one I asked for?

A. Housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. While we certainly attempt to place you in your requested hall and with your requested roommate, we can only do that if vacant spaces are available. If cancellations occur, we will try to accommodate you at that time.

I submitted my application and forgot to put my friend's name down as a roommate preference. How can I change that?

A. Please mail, FAX or email the name to the Residence Life office. The person you are requesting must do the same to verify that you both wish to roommates.

Is there still housing left?

A. We accept applications all year. Since we assign on a first-come, first-served basis, you will be assigned from among the available beds at that time. If all beds are full, we hold your application for assignment as beds become available.

How long do I have to cancel my housing and still get back my room and key deposit?

A. For students who did not live on campus last semester, refunds are given as follows:

100% if you cancel by June 1st.
50% if you cancel by July 1st.
0% if you cancel after July 1st.

For residents who participated in the room selection process for returning residents, any cancellation results in loss of your entire deposit.

If I move into housing and I don't get along with my roommate will I be able to get another room?

A. The staff in our buildings is specially trained to assist residents in developing effective roommate relationships. We use the roommate agreements as a tool to further clear understanding and communication. We also offer a room change process once a semester as an opportunity for residents to change rooms or roommates as they wish.

When will housing assignments be mailed out?

A. Fall room assignments are emailed to your St. Mary's email address by the first week of August for fall semester, and before December break for spring semester. You will be provided with your roommate's St. Mary's email address.

What is included in my room?

A. Your room contains one standard twin bed, desk, chair, closet space, and internet port per person. Floor covering varies by hall. All windows have permanent blinds or shades. All rooms are air-conditioned and have basic cable TV channels.

Are there laundry facilities available?

A. Washers and dryers are available in every hall, and the cost for their use is included in the cost of your housing.

How can I get a tour of the halls?

A. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Is Internet access provided?

A. Yes, every student has an internet port. All common area lounges also have wireless signal.

Do I need a meal plan?

A. All undergraduate residents are required to take a meal plan.

Is there maid service?

A. Housekeeping staff clean the common areas and hallways regularly. You are required to clean your own room and bathroom.
