Transfer Guide for Summer School

Please review the following information if you plan to take Summer courses at other schools. Refer any questions you have to Registrar's Office for clarification.

  • Permission to take courses at other schools will be granted only for Summer 2009 courses.

  • If you obtain permission to take courses in Summer 2009 and you are unable to take the courses, a new permission form is required to take courses the subsequent semester.

  • Request permission by filling out the form Summer Courses Transfer Form prior to registering for courses(s). This form must be completely filled out and on file at St Mary's University Registrar's Office to assure transferability of credit.  Deadline for submitting permission for Summer 2009 courses is April 17.

  • Summer School Course Load Students may take two courses each summer session. A student who takes more than two courses each summer session must present written permission from their Dean when submitting form to the Registrar's Office.

  • The maximum number of transferable hours from a junior/community college is 66.
    • If you have already completed 66 transferable hours from a junior/community college you may not transfer additional courses (from a junior/community college). This applies even courses you wish to take are CORE or Elective credit courses.
    • You may be able to transfer additional courses from a four-year school.
    • Once students reach Junior status (completed 60 or more hours) and have not already transferred the 66 hour maximum from a junior/community college, they may take 6 hours at a junior college. Additional courses may be taken at a four-year school.
  • Advanced level courses (from four-year schools) not specifically listed below, will be approved on an individual basis depending on specific degree and major.

  • Please be sure to send an official transcript, of your summer courses, sent to St. Mary's University Registrar's Office, after summer grades are posted.

  • Transcripts must be provided whether the work was satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or whether you withdrew while work was in progress.

  • Grades must be 'C' or better to transfer here.

  • Transfer hours and grades are posted to your St. Mary's University transcript as transfer courses.

  • Your transcript will show both a transfer grade point-average and St. Mary's University gpa.

Repeat Courses at other schools

  • If you plan to repeat a course you took here, for a higher grade at another school, we recommend you repeat the course here because the lower grade will not count in your St. Mary's University grade point-average.

    • If you repeat the course at St. Mary's University, the lower grade and repeated grade will both show on the transcript but only the higher grade will be computed in the grade-point-average. This will give you a higher grade-point-average here.

    • The required Math, Philosophy, Physics, or Theology courses cannot be taken elsewhere. These courses must be taken here.

    • Biology majors need approval from Biology chairperson to take Science courses at other schools. Please have courses approved prior to submitting your form in Registrar's Office.

Transcript Request Form

We recommend you request an official St. Mary's University transcript be sent to the school you wish to attend. Be sure to indicate to send transcript after Spring grades are posted. Deadline for applying for transcripts with Spring 2009 grades is Thursday, April 23. These transcripts will be processed first. Official transcripts are $3.00 per copy. You will receive a copy of your transcript request (pink copy) when you order the transcript here. This is your receipt. You may show this to your school as evidence that you have already requested an official transcript.

  • Registrating for Summer Courses - We recommend you take a St. Mary's University unofficial transcript to register. Unofficial transcripts are obtainable in the Registrar's Office by showing your St. Mary's University ID and paying the $1.00 fee.

  • THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) TEST - Most Texas colleges/universities require the THEA test. Most will exempt you if you show a copy of your St. Mary's University unofficial transcript to their THEA office.
  • International Students. Inform International Student Services Director, that you plan to take Summer courses at another school and make sure you will remain in status.
