Bro. Paul Combest, President's Peace Commission, hosts this panel discussion featuring Sr. Mona Smiley, American Red Cross; and Shari Sherman, teacher, North East ISD in San Antonio. Sister Smiley teaches about the Christian's role toward those with AIDS; she urges everyone to be compassionate. Ms. Sherman discusses how her life has changed since she became infected with the HIV virus; she details how she takes 22-25 pills each day, spends $800 each month on HIV-related medication and doctors' visits, and is restricted to a very limited diet because the medicine has eaten away at her stomach. Cecilia Aguilar, President's Peace Commission, serves as host for this panel discussion featuring Father William Ellos, SJ, Miller Chair on Medical and Biomedical Ethics, St. Mary's University, and Adela Santos, JD, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Father Ellos discusses some of the pitfalls of the AIDS education program, such as the poster encouraging women to "make sure he's wearing a condom" which doesn't mention that 60-70% of women only using a condom as contraception become pregnant. Ms. Santos discusses Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which deals with the employment of persons with disabilities; persons with AIDS are covered by the ADA because they are considered to have a physical impairment, she explains. 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM: A Day in the Life: What is AIDS? What is It Like to Live With It?

Judy Geelhoed, President's Peace Commission, hosts this presentation by the San Antonio AIDS Foundation. Cecil Stark introduces Jim, Christine, and Paul, who are all living with AIDS. She explains the truth behind some common myths about AIDS and the spread of the disease. Her three co-panelists then each explain how their lives have changed as a result of becoming infected with the HIV virus. A question and answer period concludes the presentation. Presented as part of the President's Peace Commission spring 1995 program, "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome." (71 minutes)

THE PRESIDENT'S PEACE COMMISSION

The purpose of the President's Peace Commission is to foster ethical commitment to participate in the establishment of world peace. That purpose recognizes that a respect for human rights and the dignity of all people is essential to any such commitment.

The Commission serves to create within the St. Mary's University community an awareness of the Roman Catholic perspective as a foundation for directing the dialogue among the broad and varied human and religious enterprises, themselves directed toward peace. It especially takes direction from the United States Catholic Conference and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

The Peace Commission, founded in 1984, is comprised of students, staff, and faculty, all with equal status.If you would like more information about the President's Peace Commission, please contact any one of its members:
