The Reverend John Moder, President of St. Mary's University, presents Dr. Antonio Rigual, National President of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). Dr. Rigual discusses the purposes of HACU and the problems inherent in the American higher education system facing Hispanic Americans that HACU seeks to address. (30 minutes)

Mrs. Simone Donahue, eighth grade history teacher and Middle School Reprsentative of the North East Independent School District to the American Federation of Teachers, discusses ways to make justice part of our daily lives; these include maintaining a critical attitude toward the media, keeping abreast of current events using a variety of sources, and being politically engaged. Sr. Ann Semel, St. Mary's University Project 30 coordinator, introduces Dr. Daniel Fallon, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and professor of psychology at Texas A & M, and National Director of Project 30. Dr. Fallon discusses the objectives and componenents of the project, a national initiative to improve teacher training. Dr. Greg Walters, professor of theology at St. Mary's University and coordinator of the Peace and Justice minor, presents Fr. John A. Leies, Director of the St. Mary's Institute for Professional Ethics, and Barbara Bader Aldave, Dean of St. Mary's University School of Law. In this first panel, the focus is the realization of St. Mary's University's mission to contribute to peace and social justice. The speakers discuss the Peace and Justice minor program and efforts by the School of Law to provide opportunities for its students to develop interest in and gain experience in public interest law. Dr. Bashrui shares his experiences with conflict in the Middle East and discusses the idea of peace through literature and the need to re-think our education programs. Ms. Marina Douenat, a student at St. Mary's University and member of the Presidents' Peace Commission, presents Dr. James Vasquez, Superintendent of the Edgewood Independent School District, and Dr. Ray Leal, Director of St. Mary's University's Public Justice Program. Several legal cases brought in federal and state courts to combat the economic segregation in San Antonio public education are discussed. First of two programs on this video. (57 minutes)

Dr. Richard Pressman, Professor of English at St. Mary's University and Member of the President's Peace Commission, presents Ms. Cynthia Duda, a public school teacher and Director of the San Antonio Educators for Social Responsibility. Discussion centers on the need to incorporate women and their accomplishments into the educational process and stressing that peace education needs to include education for empowerment. President's Peace Commission
Mission Statement
The purpose of the President's Peace Commission is to foster ethical commitment to participate in the establishment of world peace. That purpose recognizes that a respect human rights and the dignity of all people is essential to any such commitment. The Commission serves to create within the St. Mary's University community an awareness of the Roman Catholic perspective as a foundation for directing the dialogue among broad and varied human and religious enterprises, themselves directed toward peace. It especially takes direction from the United States Catholic Conference and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.
The President's Peace Commission, founded in 1984, is comprised of at least 15 members: five students, five staff, and five faculty, or more, all with equal status.
