Neighborhood Revitalization
St. Mary's has created a partnership with the surrounding neighborhoods to ensure that the region continues to grow and prosper. The St. Mary's University Neighborhood Revitalization Project is a collaboration between University faculty and staff, neighborhood residents, local business owners, and area government. Projects have included the creation of a neighborhood center, the hiring of a part-time housing counselor who will serve income-eligible residents, and securing funds for public parks. Not only does the Revitalization Project serve the community, it offers hands-on internship opportunities to St. Mary's students. For a closer look, visit the Neighborhood Revitalization Project at www.stmuproject.org. Another venture that closely serves the University Park neighborhood as well as the city of San Antonio, is the SABÉR Research Institute—an economic development think tank dedicated to researching regional economies and their development. Lead by Steven Nivin, Ph.D., an assistant economics professor at St. Mary's, the Research Institute conducts economic research on local economies expert and offers counsel to organizations such as city government and businesses. This partnership with the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is yet another exciting opportunity for students to become involved in real-world work experience while simultaneously giving back to the community.
