Leona Pallansch, Ph. D., introduces Marian Haddad, who in turn bestows the Art of Peace Award upon H. Palmer Hall, Ph.D., Director, Louis J. Blume Library, St. Mary's University. Dr. Hall reads a poem by Susan Atefat-Peckham before reading a piece of prose he had written about the G.I.s Against Vietnam March. He also read a portion of an essay about the Big Thicket in East Texas and the murder of James Byrd, Jr. He concluded with two poems: one about the second Iraq War; the other about Pete's Pond. 7 PM: Ninth Annual Art of Peace Award & 19th Annual President's Peace Concert

This year's Art of Peace Award was awarded posthumously. Abbie Cotrell welcomes the audience. Diane Bertrand reads a story of Trinidad Sanchez, Jr. and shows a video of Mr. Sanchez reading his work in Karen Navarte's international literature class. An unidentified man then reads a few of Sanchez's poems. Fernando Esteban Flores reads two of Sanchez's poems. The Choral Santa Maria sings. Ramon Vasquez reads two of Sanchez's poems. Jim Brandenburg talks about Trinidad and reads the introduction to Poems of the Father. The St. Mary's orchestra plays a few numbers. Ms. Cotrell presents Trinidad Sanchez's widow with the Art of Peace Award. (102 minutes)

The St. Mary's University Jazz Band plays a few numbers. Dr. Richard Pressman discusses Sister Barbara Paleczny's work. Father Bernard Lee prays a prayer of peace and presents the award to Sister Barbara. Sister Barbara thanks the President's Peace Commission and explains how she began painting and drawing. The session is concluded with more selections from the Jazz Band. Sr. Barbara Paleczny, a School Sister of Notre Dame, is an academic, teacher, gadfly, peace worker, polemicist, author, and painter. Of Canadian origin, Sr. Barbara has lived in England, Bolivia, and now San Antonio. Daughter of two garment workers, she has published three books, the most recent being Clothed in Integrity: Weaving Just Cultural Relations and the Garment Industry. Her social-justice paintings have been exhibited regionally and nationally. (60 minutes)

Dr. Charles Cotrell, President of St. Mary's University, hosts and introduces Rosemary Catacalos, Director of Gemini Ink, who serves as the presenter. Ms. Catacalos introduces the recipient, Naomi Shihab Nye, a poet and fiction writer, who reads from her works. A question and answer session concludes this presentation. (44 minutes)

Sister Grace Walle, of the St. Mary's University's Campus Ministry for the School of Law, provides the invocation to this awards ceremony. Dr. David Manuel, Vice President of Academic Affairs at St. Mary's University, welcomes the audience and introduces Dr. Charles Cotrell, President of St. Mary's University, who thanks and congratulates the President's Peace Commission for their work twice a year. Dr. Rose Marie Cutting, professor in the English Department at St. Mary's University, introduces the Alice Franzke Feminist Award, by explaining who Alice Frazke was and the purpose of the award. She presents the award to Ana Novoa, JD, professor of Law at St. Mary's University and acting director of Clinical Programs; and to Lee Teran, JD, School of Law at St. Mary's University, and Co-Director for Civil Rights Under Law of Texas. Both recipients express their thanks. Dr. Larry Hufford, professor in Political Science and International Relations at St. Mary's University, explains the background of the Art of Peace Award and introduces the recipient of the award, Sister Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI, PhD, from the Religious Studies department at University of Incarnate Word. Sr. Martha Ann expresses her thanks. Diane Duesterhoeft provides concluding remarks. (36 minutes)

Lynnelle Burkett, editor of the editorial page of the San Antonio Express News, welcomes everyone and introduces Brother Cletus Behlman, the 2001 recipient of the Art of Peace Award. Brother Cletus discusses the honors of receiving the award, introduces John Branch, and reads and presents Mr. Branch's plaque. Mr. Branch expresses his gratitude. Following the remarks, several examples of Branch's artwork are displayed. (14 minutes)

Dr. Charles Cotrell, president of St. Mary's University, discusses the work of the President's Peace Commission and presents Dr. Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill, St. Mary's University professor of English and Communication Studies. (Dr. Hill delivers the acceptance speech of Brother Cletus Behlmann, SM, recipient of the Third Annual Art of Peace Award, who was unable to attend.) Dr. Hill also discusses themes in Brother Cletus' artwork. St. Mary's fine arts professor, Sharon McMahon, then narrates a slideshow of Bro. Cletus' works. Finally, special award recipient Dr. Amy Freeman Lee delivers remarks on the power of choice, and connections between art and life. (51 minutes)

6:30 PM: The 2nd Annual Art of Peace Award and 15th Annual Peace Concert

In the first program, host Dr. Charles Cotrell, acting president of St. Mary's University, introduces presenter Bryce Milligan, director of the literature program at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Mr. Milligan outlines the life and accomplishments and presents the recipient of the Art of Peace Award, Mr. John Phillip Santos, noted author and documentary film producer. Mr. Santos reads selections from his National Book Award-nominated autobiographical work, Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation [3d Floor, Call Number F394.S2119 M5175 1999] shows excerpts of his films, "Hunger for God, Hunger for Bread," and "Late City," and discusses how these works, as well as other life experiences, shaped and were shaped by a greater life work of pursuing meaning in personal, familial, spiritual, and humanitarian spheres.

In the second program, St. Mary's University Concert Band performs under the direction of student conductor Jenni Willis-Opalenik, and then with conductor Gary Rosenblatt, and with piano accompaniment by Professor John P. Moore. The pieces performed are: Terig Tucci's "Lola Flores" (arranged by John Krance); Percy Grainger's "Colonial Song"; Mark Camphouse's "A Movement for Rosa"; and Vittorio Giannini's Symphony No. 3, Movement 1." Dr. Charles Cotrell, acting president of St. Mary's University, hosts and Mr. Bryce Milligan, director of the literature program at the Guadalupe Arts Cultural Center and publisher of Wings Press, introduces three women poets of San Antonio: Ms. Carmen Tafolla, Ms. Paulette Jiles, and Ms. Angela De Hoyos. Each poet reads selections of her work; these include Ms. Tafolla's "Occupation: None," "The Urge to Write," and "How Shall I Tell You?," Ms. Jiles' "Paper Matches" and "One Sister," and Ms. De Hoyos' "To Honor the Fact." Dr. Cotrell congratulates the Peace Commission and presents awards to the recipients. (67 minutes)
