Natural Disaster Response
St. Mary's University has a critical incident response team which is activated in the case of any natural disaster or major crisis.
Tornado Safety
Texas weather is very diverse and at times can create conditions that may cause a tornado. When the weather appears to be changing, it is important to keep abreast of weather reports/bulletins and take precautions given by the local media.
Tornado Weather Distinctions
Tornado Watch - this indicates the conditions are right for a tornado to develop.
Tornado Warning - this indicates a tornado has actually been sighted.
A warning is issued by a tone on the area radio and television stations followed by exact weather information. At this time, emergency procedures should be followed.
Tornado Safety Tips
- If inside a building, go to the basement.
- If there is not a basement, go to an outside lower corridor or stairwell. Stay clear of windows and areas with wide free-span roofs (i.e. gyms, etc.).
- If outside walking, or in a car, go to the nearest building and head for the basement or lower corridor.
- If you see a tornado and there is not any time to escape:
Lie flat in a depressed area. Stay away from overhead wires. Keep your face and head covered. - Wait for the "all clear" notice given by media or emergency personnel before returning to original site.
Hurricane Safety
When a hurricane is thought to affect San Antonio, please listen to instructions given by University personnel and local media. Sign up for campus alert text messages online and monitor the St. Mary's University webpage for an inclement weather button on the homepage. When the button appears, click it to learn critical information on how weather is affecting St. Mary's classes and events, as well as instructions on how to protect yourself. Be prepared to stay on campus, as heavy rains may cause street closures due to low water crossings and flooding.
Power Outages
Intermittent power outages are a possibility during inclement weather. If a power outage should occur, do not light candles! Candles are expressly forbidden in the residence halls and this policy will be strictly enforced.
