Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What type of work do we do?
Phonathon doesn't really fit one single category or another. It's really a mix of public relations, alumni relations, fundraising and telemarketing. We call alumni on behalf of St. Mary's to touch base with them, and to verify and update their contact information. Our main focus is to ask them to support the University with monetary donations. The money that we raise goes anywhere from student scholarships and academic programs to athletics and University Ministry (just to name a few). Our student callers are the most important part of St. Mary's Phonathon. They play a big part in keeping alumni connected with St. Mary's.
  2. When and where do we meet?
We meet from 5:30 to 9 p.m. every Monday through Thursday, in Conference Room D, which is located in the University Center. If you know where the cafeteria is, you can find us. Just go up the stairs to the second floor and you'll see Conference Room D.
  3. What if I don't have any experience?
Are you enthusiastic? Do you have a passion to help students attend St. Mary's? Then this may be the place for you. Every semester new students join our team with little or no experience. We provide the training and support to help our employees succeed. The experience you gain working with St. Mary's Phonathon will benefit you regardless of your chosen career field.
  4. Do I have to come every night?
Phonathon is a REAL job, which just happens to be on campus; it isn't like work-study. When you are hired by St. Mary's Phonathon, you become a part-time member of the University Development staff. Your responsibilities must be taken seriously. We call from 5:30 to 9 p.m., four nights a week. A 20-minute break is given during the night and once-in-a-while food is provided for special occassions. If you think that this job will interfere with your other commitments, perhaps it might be best to consider a job that better suits your schedule.
  5. What if I have a night class?
Skip it! No, that's a joke. Attendance is a big thing with us, too. We can often accomodate a night class if it's once-a-week, but we'll review each circumstance individually.
  6. I've heard of "Thankathon." What is it? Is it part of the Phonathon?
Yes. Our Thankathon usually takes place at the beginning of our Spring Phonathon campaign. During this part of the campaign we call each alum that gave a gift during the previous season to thank them for their support.
  7. How can I apply?
Come by the University Development Office in St. Louis Hall, Room 208 to pick up an application. But, if you want, you can save yourself a trip and download one here: Phonathon Employment Application
  8. What if I have more questions?
We'd be happy to tell you more about Phonathon. You can contact Rosemary Segura, the Development Officer for the St. Mary's Fund. Her e-mail address is rsegura@stmarytx.edu, or you can give her a call at (210) 431-8089. You can also send her a message on Facebook.
