Zaragoza Leaders
Zaragoza Leaders are an integral part of the New Student Orientation process of St. Mary's University. They are trained in many areas in order to better serve new students and their families. Some of these areas include:
- Facilitating small group sessions for students and parents.
- Coordinating projects and events during orientation.
- Leading campus tours.
- Acquainting students with services and campus rules and regulations.
- Assisting students in the academic advising and registration process.
- Assisting in the success of new students and parents.
Skills Needed
Ability to:
- Represent St. Mary's University in a mature and professional manner.
- Work well in fast paced, high pressure situations.
- Work as a team player using good communication skills and enthusiasm.
Zaragoza Leader Requirements
- Currently enrolled StMU students with 12 hours completed by the end of the Fall Semester 2012.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Attendance at the Zaragoza Leader Retreat.
- Attend at least one of the June Zaragoza programs:
- June I First Year Orientation
- June II First Year Orientation
- ZL's working both June sessions will be allowed to remain in their on-campus accommodations until after June II.
- Attendance at the August Zaragoza session:
- August Transfer and First Year Zaragoza
- May Transfer Zaragoza program is optional but highly encouraged:
- May Transfer Zaragoza
Zaragoza Leader Compensation
Through the Zaragoza Leader experience, leaders will learn valuable communication and leadership skills necessary to excel in all aspects of academia as well as in their personal and professional lives. The Zaragoza Leader role is not a paid position; however, meals, leadership training, bags, and staff shirts are provided when working. June leaders will stay on campus free of charge during Orientation. August leaders can move on-campus a week earlier than returning students.
Zaragoza Director and Leader Selection Process
The New Student Orientation Office hires new leaders during the Fall Semester. Here are some of the guidelines as to what to do if you are interested in becoming a Zaragoza Leader.

Zaragoza Leader(ZL) Application
- Students may also pick up an application packet from the Student Life Office (SLO) or UC - 254 anytime between 8:00am and 5:00pm daily beginning Tuesday, October 9, 2012.
- When turning in your application please sign up for an individual interview time at the SLO reception desk. Zaragoza Leader (ZL) applications must be received by 5:00pm on Friday, November 14, 2012.
- Have a faculty or staff member fill out the recommendation form and campus mail it to "New Student Orientation Box 83" November 14, 2012 if you are applying for the ZL position.
