Interested in Becoming a Student Orientation Assistant?

The Student Orientation Assistants (SOAs) are an integral part of the New Student Orientation process of St. Mary's University. SOAs are trained in many areas in order to better serve new students and their families. Some of these areas include:

  • Facilitating small group sessions for students and parents
  • Coordinating projects and events during orientation
  • Leading campus tours
  • Acquainting students with services and campus rules and regulations
  • Assisting students in the academic advising and registration process
  • Being a StMU representative to assist in the success of new students and parents during orientation

Volunteer Requirements

  • Currently enrolled students at St. Mary's University having completed 12 hours by the end of the Fall Semester 2008.
  • Satisfactory academic standing with a minimum last semester GPA of 2.0 and cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Attendance at the SOA Retreat in the Spring Semester, January 2009.
  • Enrollment in the SOA Training class (ND1122) during the 2009 Spring Semester, Thursdays from 2:00 -3:15 p.m.
  • Attendance at one of the June Orientation programs and at least one of the other three orientation sessions.

    • Transfer Orientation
  • Represent St. Mary's in a mature and professional manner.
  • Work well in fast paced, high-pressure situations.
  • Work as a team player using good communication skills and enthusiasm.

SOA Compensation

An SOA is not a paid position; however, meals and staff shirts are provided when working. SOA's receive one hour of class credit by registering for the ND1122 University Life course. June SOA's will stay on campus free of charge during Orientation. August SOA's can move on-campus a week earlier than returning students.

SOA Selection Process

The New Student Orientation Program hires new SOA's every year during the Fall Semester. Here are some of the guidelines as to what to do if you are interested in becoming an SOA. Remember, everything is done during the Fall Semester and first-year freshmen are more than welcomed to apply!

  • Visit the Orientation website at www.stmarytx.edu/orientation to apply online.
  • Download a recommendation form from www.stmarytx.edu/orientation and have it completed by a faculty or staff member of St. Mary's University.
  • A 15 minute individual interview.
  • Participation in a group interview.
