St. Mary´s Women´s Basketball Falls to Southeastern Oklahoma in Double Overtime

SAN ANTONIO—Destiny Brown scored the go-ahead bucket in the second overtime, then iced the game with late free throws, lifting Southeastern Oklahoma State University to an 82-78 victory over St. Mary’s University in double overtime Saturday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

After a back-and-forth second half that went to overtime after Brown made a driving layup with four seconds left, the overtime was just as exciting. Mareta Bailey (Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas) gave the Rattlers the early lead, but SOSU reeled off five straight points to take a three point lead with nine seconds left. That’s when Nicole James (So., Indianapolis, Ind.) drove to the basket and found a wide-open DeAnna Patterson (So., Converse, Texas), who hit a three-pointer with four seconds left, sending the game into a second overtime.

In the final period, the teams battled back and forth until Brown’s three-point play with 53 seconds left gave them the lead for good. James desperation shot at the buzzer was shot, sending the Rattlers to their first loss of the season, while giving the Savage Storm the St. Mary’s Classic Tournament title.

Bailey scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Rattlers, while Chastity Noble (Sr., El Paso, Texas) scored a career-high 19 points. Kristin Williams (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) had her second double-double of the young season, scoring 15 points, while pulling down 13 rebounds.

The Rattlers took charge from the start of the game. St. Mary’s started the game with a 10-2 run, keyed by three-pointers by Bailey and Noble. The lead would expand to double digits on a jumper by James at 14-4 with 15:57 left in the half. The Savage Storm rallied to cut the lead to just three on a jumper by Jessica Hesse, but the Rattlers quickly ran off a 13-4 run, with Williams contributing six points in the run, giving St. Mary’s its biggest lead at 36-23. After SOSU cut the lead to seven points, Felicia Jacobs finished off the half with a three-pointer with six seconds left on a kickoff pass from James.

St. Mary’s fell to 2-1 with the loss, while SOSU improved to 2-0. In the first game of the day, Northeastern State made their first 12 shots of the game and cruised to a 64-43 win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. NSU finished the tournament at 1-1, while UTPB was 0-2.

St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday when they host the University of Arkansas at Monticello at Bill Greehey Arena at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a women’s/men’s doubleheader. The game will be broadcast live at http://www.stmarytx.edu/athletics/index.php?site=snakePit and live stats will be available at http://media.stmarytx.edu/~rattlerathletics/livestats/wbasketball/xlive.htm.
