McNair Scholars Program

Faculty Mentor Responsibilities

Fall and Spring Responsibilities

  • Meet with scholar at least twice monthly (sign summaries for submission to program office)
  • During the second week of each semester, meet with scholar to assess needs
  • Monitor scholar academic progress and report concerns to program office
  • Identify scholar skill deficits and address and report to program office
  • Identify barriers to student success and report to program office
  • Assist scholar with completion of Qualification Profile
  • Assist scholar with creation of Individual Progress Plan (update each semester)
  • Assist on advising, registration and recommended tutoring
  • Recommend workshops tailored to scholar needs
  • Review and edit scholar personal statement
  • Suggest graduate programs and guide the review of programs
  • Assist scholar in application process

Summer Responsibilities

  • Recommend prerequisite skills and course work
  • Complete the faculty research mentor/scholar commitment agreement
  • Compile reading list
  • Meet with scholar before summer session
  • Attend faculty research mentor training session
  • Meet and work with scholar daily (M-Th) during the eight-week session
  • Discuss and ensure scholar grasp of background and supporting literature
  • Assist in the identification of a research problem/topic of appropriate scope
  • Assist in the development of student research proposal
  • Assist in the design of research method/protocol
  • Assure appropriate and necessary ethics and HS-IRB/IACUC compliance and approval
  • Guide data collection and analysis
  • Guide and review for revision final scholar research paper
  • Assist in scholar creation of research presentation
  • Attend McNair Scholars Research Symposium
