The Society of Mary accepted the document "Characteristics of Marianist Education" in 1996. The purpose of the document is to articulate the common elements of Marianist educational philosophy and spirit. The five elements that characterize the Marianist approach to education are:

• Educate for formation in faith
• Provide an integral quality education
• Educate in the family spirit
• Educate for service, justice and peace
• Educate for adaptation and change
