Peer-Tutor Job Description

Qualifications

  1. Be a currently enrolled St. Mary's student, undergraduate or graduate.
  2. Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  3. Demonstrate an excellent comprehension of tutored subject.
  4. Possess a genuine desire to help others.
  5. Work well in close contact with people of all ages.
  6. Utilize refined communication skills.
  7. Submit with application, two completed Faculty Recommendation Forms from professors within your tutored subject and a current unofficial transcript.
  8. Prospective Writing tutors must submit two writing samples (papers from class are fine).

Major functions or responsibilities of a peer-tutor

  • Work on a one-to-one basis or in group(s) of up to six students.
  • Help students evaluate their own work by assisting them in analyzing areas that can be improved:
    • organization of study material
    • time management
    • mechanics, grammar, basic algebraic calculations, common principles, terminology, traditional procedures, etc.
    • interpretation of assignments
    • study methods
  • Be a sounding board--coach, critic and friend.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions designed to reinforce skills and enhance knowledge.
  • Keep records of students' performance and visitations to the LAC.
  • Establish and maintain communication with the faculty of your discipline.
  • Assist director with administrative duties:
    • greet and schedule students
    • answer telephone inquiries
    • maintain student and other Center records
    • assist students and peer-tutors with materials, equipment, schedules, and program procedures
    • conduct topical seminars
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward the job and students.
