Policies and Procedures

  • Food or tobacco products are not allowed in the library or study carrels.
  • Drinks are allowed only in spill-proof containers.
  • Cell phone usage is restricted to the foyer of the library.
  • Legal practitioners, pro se patrons, and others not affiliated with St. Mary's University, are allowed to enter and use the law library for conducting legal research or seeking legal information and/or government documents. The library reserves the right to restrict access to the library for non-University affiliated patrons if necessary.
  • The law library staff will provide reference assistance to patrons seeking legal information or conducting legal research. However, the library staff is not allowed to give legal advice or help fill out legal forms for patrons.
  • St. Mary's University law students, law faculty, law staff, and other University faculty, staff and students may check out library books and other items that are for general circulation. A valid ID card issued by St. Mary's University is required to borrow any library items. An alternative ID may be accepted for loan purposes upon approval by the Director.
  • Circulation period is three weeks at a time with one renewal allowed as long as the same item(s) are not wanted by other patrons. Reserve items can be checked out for 4 hours only. Users with overdue items are charged $1 per item per day (50 cents per hour per item for reserve materials), and items overdue for more than 3 weeks are deemed lost. The replacement cost for a lost item is the dollar amount of the item plus $25 for service charge.
  • Study carrels are assigned only to law students working on the Law Journal, the Scholar, or Law Faculty teaching or research assistants, LL.M. students, independent study students, and students (St. Mary's Alumni) studying for the Bar Exam.
  • Interlibrary loan services is available to St. Mary's University law students, law faculty and staff only.
  • Documentary delivery service is provided to attorneys, law firms, other legal professionals, and businesses based on a service fee. This service covers copying and mailing (or faxing) materials, such as court cases, statutes, regulations, articles, and book chapters.
