Career Services for St. Mary’s Law Alumni

The Office of Career Services (OCS) offers numerous services to St. Mary’s Law alumni. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we may be of assistance.

Local and national employers post available attorney and legal-related positions on our job bank hosted by Symplicity.

If you do not have a password for this system, please request a password by filling out the form on our website.

St. Mary’s Law alumni have access to job postings from various law schools across the nation by accessing the Intercollegiate Job Bank.

To access the Intercollegiate Job Bank, log into Symplicity, and you will see the link and password for the Intercollegiate Job Bank on the right side under Shortcuts.

The OCS maintains its own library of career resources. The OCS Resource Center contains a wide variety of publications on career and job search information and legal specialties. We also have directories for courts, government agencies, non-profit and public interest organizations and corporations. In addition, various reference books for non-legal/alternative careers are available for review.

The OCS Resource Center is equipped with computer terminals, printers, fax machine and scanner to be used for career related purposes. We also have a webcam for students and alumni to use for our Interviewstream web based mock interview software.

You can also access numerous articles, resources and on-demand programming in our Document Library in Symplicity. It is easy - just log into Symplicity and click on the tab called Document Library.

Martindale-Hubbell Directory
This is a national directory of law firms listed by state, city and alphabetically by firm. The directory includes information about geographic locations, practice areas, and biographies of each attorney listed.

National Directory of Legal Employers
The National Association for Law Placement provides information on more than 1500 employers nationwide (by state and city).

Agencies for Contract and Temporary Work
The OCS maintains a national list of contract and temporary agencies for lawyers. To access this list, please search for it in Symplicity under the Document Library tab.

Dean Bracey and Director Patrick are happy to assist alumni in drafting and editing rèsumès and cover letters.

To have your rèsumè or cover letter reviewed, please e-mail it to Alicia Mendoza. She will direct the rèsumè or cover letter to the appropriate person and the document will be sent back to you with comments and edits.

The Symplicity Document Library also has several resources for drafting rèsumès and cover letters that you can access as you begin to draft these documents.

The OCS has web based mock interview software called Interviewstream. This web based software allows you to conduct a mock interview, record it via webcam and submit it to our office for review.

Interviewstream is easily accessible through Symplicity without the need for any additional log in. You will find it under the Jump To section on the right side of Symplicity. Just log in, record your mock interview and submit it. Someone from OCS will review the interview and send you back comments.

For detailed information on how to use Interviewstream, please look up the user guide located in Symplicity under the Document Library tab.

Graduates seeking opportunities outside the San Antonio area may want to take advantage of reciprocity from other law schools. This is a system by which the OCS requests the career services office of another law school to grant St. Mary’s students and graduates access to that school’s resources. Reciprocity is requested and granted on an individual basis. Each law school has its own reciprocity policies regarding what it offers to someone from another law school. Therefore, if you want reciprocity with a particular law school, make sure to review that school’s policies.

Some special restrictions to consider:
  • Reciprocity is closed during Fall recruiting (August to November)
  • Length of access varies from school to school (e.g., one visit, one month)
  • Access to resources (e.g., some allow online access to current job postings and others do not, most do not allow a meeting with counselor)
  • Please allow two weeks for our office to process your request and receive a response from the other school
  • Reciprocity is granted on one to one basis, therefore limiting the number of students schools can send to each other.
Reciprocity is a valuable favor from another law school. Therefore, if you are requesting reciprocity:
  • Ask only if you definitely need and will definitely use, hopefully to the maximum, the resources available to you at the other law school
  • Request reciprocity when you are ready to use it. There is a clock on your reciprocity to the other law school. Reciprocity starts on the letter’s mailing/receipt date. Once expired, you must reapply.
Please email Alicia Mendoza if you would like our office to request reciprocity with another law school’s career services office on your behalf.

Our greatest career resources are our alumni. Current students are eager to learn about the law profession and specific practice areas from practicing attorneys. Listed below are a few ways in which you can get involved with our law students.
Many alumni wonder how, other than financially, they can give back to the Law School. Joining our Professional Network is an excellent way to make a contribution to our future legal professionals and to the St. Mary’s University School of Law.

The OCS has established a great resource: the St. Mary’s Law Professional Network. The Professional Network is a listing of St. Mary’s Law alumni and friends who are available to advise students on practice trends, geographic areas, and other career-related topics via email. Your time commitment could be a brief response to a student inquiry or ongoing supportive guidance. As a mentor, in addition to helping current students avoid some of the pitfalls and perils commonly faced by new lawyers, you stay connected to the Law School and develop a chain of contact with students and alumni that can be both personally and professionally rewarding.

How the Professional Network works: Your name and contact information will not be published or widely distributed. As a student seeks career counseling and needs specialized advice, they will login to Symplicity to access the database of professionals and conduct a search for the contact most suited to assist with their career related questions.

If you would like to offer your time and experience by joining the Professional Network, simply follow these instructions:

Throughout the school year, the OCS schedules panels and programs on a variety of practice areas and career-related issues. We are always looking for alumni to share their expertise and individual perspectives. Additionally, each fall and spring the OCS offers mock interview programs to help students improve their interview skills and prepare for on-campus interviews and self-directed career searches.

If you have a particular focus and would be willing to be a panelist or are interested in participating in our mock interview programs, please contact Suzanne Patrick or at (210) 436-3511.
