St. Mary’s Responds to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

St. Mary's University is currently working on a number of responses to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and their devastating impact on the Gulf Coast of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Latest developments from Thursday’s meeting:

  • Most of the original Katrina Relief Fund t-shirts have been sold. More sizes have been ordered, and will be available in the bookstore for a $10 donation. All proceeds go to the Katrina Relief Fund. Special Note: students can charge t-shirts to their bookstore accounts!
  • A sub-committee has begun to work to exhibit online photographs and stories of personal experiences of students, staff, faculty and others with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Community members with experience in the affected regions are encouraged to send their photos or stories to the St. Mary's Katrina e-mail.
  • The Service Learning Center has sponsored Spring Break immersion trips to New Orleans for the past 5 years. They are working to plan (conditions permitting) trips to be held over the Christmas and Spring breaks to assist in areas effected by Rita and Katrina. Any people who have contacts in the effected areas are asked to contact the Service Learning Center with their information.

    In addition:

An e-mail has been set up to share ideas and information, or to ask questions on how to help: katrina@stmarytx.edu. All questions/offers of help related to the relief efforts should be routed through the e-mail address or the Student Life Office, 210 436-3714.

The City of San Antonio is updating their website to provide information on how you can help. Please go to http://www.sanantonio.gov/ for more information.

Check back frequently for the latest updates on St. Mary's Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

The St. Mary’s community is invited to the Katrina and Rita Hurricane Relief meetings. These are held every Thursday at 4pm, usually upstairs in the University Center. Check with Student Life for the most up-to-date information so that you, too, can play a vital role in the relief efforts!
