What you should tell the banker before opening an account:

  • Your status as an international student
  • Whether you have experience with banking
  • Whether you have a Social Security number
  • How you need to use the account (to hold money only, to pay everyday expenses, etc.)

Questions to ask before opening an account:

  • What type of account do you need?
  • Are there any fees for the account?
  • Is there a minimum balance?
  • Can I earn interest for the account?
  • Are the banking hours and ATMs convenient for me?
  • Will I have an ATM/debit card or credit card with the account?
  • Will I be able to easily access my account when travelling or if I move?
