Be Responsible About Drinking
The B.R.A.D. Organization: This organization was founded by the family and friends of Bradley McCue, a Michigan State University junior, who died of alcohol poisoning after celebrating his 21st birthday. It is their hope that the educational information distributed by the organization will prevent other families from suffering the loss that they have sustained.
Mission Statement: To impart information that will encourage and enable responsible decision making concerning alcohol.
Purpose: To educate young adults (high school and college age) and their parents as to the responsible use of alcohol, the effects of alcohol and how to deal with excess use by others.
Goals: To work with high school, colleges and other organizations and institutions to communicate information about responsible use of alcohol. To address high school and college age young adults and their parents as appropriate.
Alcohol Poisoning - A MEDICAL EMERGENCY
Signs and Symptoms
- Unconsciousness or semi consciousness Slow respirations (breaths) of eight or less per minute, or lapses between respirations of more than eight seconds. Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin In the event of alcohol poisoning, these signs and sysmptoms will most likely be accompanied by a strong odor of alcohol.
- While these are obvious signs of alcohol poisoning, the list is certainly not all inclusive.
Appropriate Action
If you encounter a person who exhibits one or more of the signs and symptoms, do what you would do in any medical emergency: CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY
While waiting for 911 transport, gently turn the intoxicated person on his/her side and maintain that position by placing a pillow in the small of the person's back. This is important to prevent aspiration (choking) should the person vomit. Stay with the person until medical help arrives.
