Social Greek Letter organizations are your traditional fraternities and sororities. Most of these organizations have a long established history on college campuses and can be found on college campuses throughout the United States, in addition to other countries. They are governed not only by their national headquarters, but belong to national councils who provide guidance and policies to all it's members.* These national councils are the National Panhellenic Council (26 social sororities are members), the North American Interfraternity Conference (64 social fraternities), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (9 historically black social Greek Letter organizations) and National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (historically Latino social Greek Letter organizations). Social Greek Letter organizations must meet basic guidelines and requirements in order to be considered member of these councils. Social Greek Letter organizations at St. Mary's are members of the College Panhellenic Council (sororities) and the Interfraternity Council (fraternities).
*Sigma Beta Chi Fraternity is a local social fraternity at St. Mary‚¬„s University and is not governed by a national office.
