Internships

Students may have an opportunity to participate as interns within the United States or abroad for up to 6 semester hours of elective credit with the approval of the Graduate Program Director. The internships may be with governmental, non-governmental, or private sector organizations. Although it is anticipated that internship opportunities may not be generally available for online and Ft. Hood students, interested students in those programs should contact the Graduate Program Director to determine if special arrangements are possible.

Employment Opportunities

The International Relations Graduate Program is designed to enable students to understand the interrelatedness of issues necessary for developing and analyzing programs and policies relevant to international affairs. Students graduate with an understanding of major cultural, economic, historical, political, and social themes and are prepared to work in international development agencies, transnational corporations, private financial institutions, internationa, educational and cultural endeavors, private institutions, or government agencies at the federal, state, or local level, and non-governmental, non-profit organizations. Examples include international organizations such as the IMF, World Bank, the United Nations, and Oxfam; public sector opportunities are available at all levels of government, such as the Foreign Service, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, as well as state and local agencies, particularly those promoting trade and cultural exchanges; within the private sector, non-governmental, non-profit paid employment opportunities include organizations such as Bread for the World, Americas Watch, and Amnesty International; many corporations, for example the Rand Corporation and Honeywell, Inc., have established transnational links around the world.

St. Mary's IR graduates have gone on to work in such diverse areas as the U.S. State Department, U.S. Department of Defense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Peace Corp, Department of the Interior, financial and insurance institutions such as USAA and Wells Fargo, corporations like RackSpace, Southwest Research Institute, and Tesoro Refining, as well as non-profits such as the Alliance for Justice, and work with refugees, Texas-Mexico border issues, and child advocacy.

Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)

Summer paid internship program open to all degree-seeking university students that have studied and/or have experience in economics, business, IT, biotechnology, law, public affairs, program analysis, or international relations.

Foundation for Sustainable Development

International development and cultural immersion experience. Internship and volunteer opportunities for students and professionals. Application deadline for fall: July 1.

Franklin Fellows Program (State Department)

Open to mid-level professionals employed by private sector and non-profit entities. Fellows will be match with State Department bureaus and offices that can utilize their expertise. Fellowship is for one year, with possible one year extension. Must be able to obtain a security clearance.

Fulbright Scholarships

Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals, as well as employment and intern opportunity information.

Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars & Internship

Gain experience and exposure to the Texas Senate as full-time legislative assistants at the Capitol in Austin, TX. Monthly stipend.
