Institute for the Study of Asian Development

Mission

The Institute for the Study of Asian Development seeks the promotion of the practical study of international relations in the areas of rural sustainable development and business. This mission will be carried out through the creation and management of intellectual exchanges, research efforts, community outreach, colloquia, and publications.  The Mission goals will be infused and directed through the traditions and values imbued through the Marianist charism and those that have guided St. Mary’s University for more than 150 years.

Historical Background

The Institute for the Study of Asian Development was approved by the St. Mary's University Board of Trustees on November 13, 1998.  The Institute is housed in the Graduate International Relations Department at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. The Institute is an independent entity dedicated to the creation and development of programs in support of graduate and professional studies leading to community outreach and educational programs, and assisting graduate students and faculty in the pursuit of research opportunities.

Program Activity

The Institute for the Study of Asian Development (ISAD) has sponsored two lectures of leading Taiwanese political and economic scholars.  The ISAD has assisted the Graduate International Relations program in organizing student internships in Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Thailand.  ISAD has also assisted with the organization of study seminars to tribal areas of northeastern India and to Bangladesh. Current activities have faculty working with universities in Bangladesh, Taiwan and Vietnam to establish opportunities for St. Mary’s students to be interns with non-governmental organizations and to organize study seminars to the three countries.
