In this issue of Fresh Perspective, a few of our campus resources are highlighted. These campus resources are available to all students free of charge. A student's adviser or professor may recommend that your student take advantage of these resources. Students experiencing academic difficulty are encouraged to contact the appropriate campus resource for assistance.

Learning Assistance Center (LAC)

The LAC, located in the Louis J. Blume Library, offers a proven method of success for most courses—collaborative learning. Students who need tutoring in a particular subject area, assistance with their writing, or the development of good study skills, should call or come by to sign up for a tutor. The LAC offers supplemental instruction in weekly reserved group sessions for courses known to be difficult. Also weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions in writing and foreign languages are encouraged. Instructional resources such as texts, videos, and computer programs are also available for students in many subject areas. Visit us at http://library.stmarytx.edu/lac/

Career Services Center

At St. Mary's, we believe it's never too early to begin planning for the future; therefore, students are encouraged to work with the Career Services Center throughout their academic career. All freshmen participate in a career assessment activity during their first semester and are encouraged to work with the Career Services Center to learn more about their major and the different careers they can pursue. The center, located in the Center for Life Directions, also offers individual appointments with career advisers to assist students with focused career exploration and career planning activities. Students have access to the Resource Library and numerous recommended online resources to review potential occupations, salary information and job outlook data. In addition to career advising sessions and programs, the Career Services Center houses employer relations activities, including on-campus interviews for internships and full-time opportunities, employer information sessions and an online system that provides part-time, full-time and internship opportunities for students and graduates. Student Psychological and Testing Services

A variety of services are available through Student Psychological and Testing Services, also located in the Center for Life Directions. Students can meet with a personal counselor to discuss their concerns and seek personal counseling. Individual, group, and couples counseling is available for students. If students begin to experience academic difficulty, a counselor can help them explore their learning styles and study skills, evaluate their difficulties through testing, and review time management and study skills to help them improve their academic performance. For students who need assistance with the career exploration process, the center also provides assessment that helps students clarify their interests, values and abilities. Students interested in taking College Level Examination Program tests to obtain college credit can obtain testing information from Student Psychological and Testing Services. Academic Adviser

All students enrolled at St. Mary's are assigned an academic adviser. They are required to meet with their adviser to register for classes or to make changes to their course schedule. Students also are highly encouraged to meet with their academic adviser throughout the semester to discuss their academic progress, and academic and career plans. Students should meet with their academic adviser if they begin to experience academic difficulty, or if they have questions, problems, or concerns and don't know where to go for assistance.
