St. Mary’s University

A new look. This year, the Ethics Bowl serves a dual role. It continues to be a competitive event that is fun and educational for all participants. But it also serves as a qualifiying event for teams wishing to participate in the National Ethics Bowl, sponsored by Illinois Institute of Technology. The national event will take place in spring of 2007 in Cincinnati, Ohio. For more information on the National Ethics Bowl and for names of other regional bowls, follow this link: National Ethics Bowl.

The consequences of winning. As usual, the top four teams will receive a trophy. However, the arrangement concerning qualifying for the national event is more complex. Our arragement with IIT is that the top four schools from our event (not the top four teams) will be allowed to send one team to the national event. Schools who have two or more winning teams only receive a single invitation. If fewer than than four schools hold the top four places, the next school down the list will receive an invitation to go on to the national event. If a school with a winning team declines to go on, the invitation passes down the list again. Therefore, even if your team does not come home with a trophy, you may still be eligible to compete nationally.

Registration. Online registration of teams for this year's regional event at St. Mary's is now available at this link: Registration.

Cases. The seven cases this year are selected from a pool of fifteen cases written by a committee for use by all regional events. The following link displays the entire set of fifteen cases as a Web page: Complete pool of potential cases. The page also contains a pdf file with all the cases. The seven cases that we will use in our event are 1, 3, 5, 9, 10, 11, and 13. The following link is to a Word document containing just the cases that will be used in the Texas Regional Ethics Bowl: Cases for 2006.

Fees. Breaking with an eight-year tradition, we will charge a registration fee this year. The fee will be fifty dollars for each school plus twenty-five dollars per team. Checks should be made payable to St. Mary's University and postmarked by October 20.
