Recycle and Sustainability
UPCOMING EVENT!.........."Fasting for Sustainable Living"
Sustainability Committee meets the last Thursday of each month in Garni 217. The committee is comprised of students, faculty, and professional staff all working towards improving the environmental health of St. Mary's University.
Recycling: St. Mary's University has programs in place to recycle aluminum cans, paper, cardboard, batteries, lamps, e-waste, used tires, and ink cartridges. This program has been expanded in 2012 to increase the number of recycling containers at the Residence Halls and capture the increase in plastic and paper products on being used on campus.
UPDATE: St. Mary's University has purchased a large recycle compactor (40CY) to be used for co-mingled material. The new compactor was installed May 2012 and increases our recycle capacity to include glass products and at the same time reducing costs of disposal.
The Environmental Health and Safety Office is working together with Physical Plant and student interest groups such as the Student Sustainability Committee (SSC) to coordinate student participation and support for the University recycling program. The students take an active role in sharing information with the student body in order to make the program more successful. Waste minimization efforts are also underway on campus in areas of recycle, reclamation, and material exchange programs for batteries, capacitors and ballasts (non-PCB), used motor oil, tires, and refrigerant oil.
Sustainability: The SSC is acvtively engaged in developing initiatives to drive resource sustainability. One such initiative is the "Flick Me Off" stickers that are being placed on all campus residence light switches to remind students to turn off the lights when leaving the room.
