Faculty should meet with students to discuss course content, expectations and appropriate accommodations after they have received proper verification of the disability from the Dean of Students. Faculty members and the Dean of Students should collaborate on providing and integrating reasonable, effective and appropriate accommodations for the student in the classroom. Questions that faculty members have concerning their obligations can also be addressed with the Dean of Students. A statement encouraging disabled students to contact faculty should be considered for inclusion in course syllabi. Faculty should consider including or adapting the following statement for this purpose. “St. Mary's University seeks to provide equal access to its programs, services and activities for people with disabilities. In order to establish the existence of a disability and/or request reasonable, effective and appropriate accommodations for this class, you should contact the Coordinator for Disabled Student Services at 436-3714. Accommodations can then be made with reasonable prior notice to the instructor.“ Once the need for reasonable, effective and appropriate accommodations has been verified by the Dean of Students, a specific academic accommodations plan is developed. At this time, all University employees, without exception, are obliged to comply with the University's responsibility to provide the reasonable, effective and appropriate accommodations. |
