The School Specific Core (SSC)

In accord with the mission of St. Mary's University and the vision, goals and objectives of the Core Curriculum, the School Specific Core (SSC) offers courses that address key areas of knowledge and skill not covered by the St. Mary's Core (SMC), or that enhance the understanding of important disciplines introduced there. In order to allow for greater flexibility in course design and for the needs of particular majors and programs, the distribution of requirements in the SSC will vary according to undergraduate school. Below are listed the following:

A Summary of Foreign Language Requirements in the SSC

For students in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and the School of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET)*

The Foreign Language requirement may be fulfilled by completing coursework in one of the following three ways:

1. By successfully completing 6 (six) hours in a Foreign Language not previously studied.
2. By successfully completing 6 (six) hours at the sophomore level in a Foreign Language previously studied for a minimum of one year.
3. By successfully completing a Foreign Language course in the 3000, 4000, or 5000 level and earning a grade of at least B minus.

The Foreign Language requirement may also be fulfilled in one of the following three ways:

• International Students may substitute the Foreign Language requirement for 6 (six) hours of American Government, American History, American Literature, or Historical Critical Inquiry into American Culture.
• CLEP (College-Level Examination Program): A student can choose to take the CLEP exam in lieu of the Foreign Language requirement. Credit will be obtained when the student receives the score required for sophomore level at that language. A CLEP exam covering the student's native language is acceptable.
• AP (Advanced Placement exams): A student can take AP exams in any of the languages taught in the department (including the student's native language). Depending on the score obtained on the AP, the student can obtain up to 12 (twelve) credits in that language, thus fulfilling the Foreign Languages requirement. Scores that merit less than 12 (twelve) credits will place the student in the appropriate course level.

*(Students majoring in Computer, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering are exempted from the Foreign Language requirement.)

For students in the Bill Greehey School of Business (BGSB)

All majors in the Business School, except for International Business and Accounting, are required to fulfill six hours of language. This can be met by:

• CLEP (College-Level Examination Program): Credit will be obtained when the student receives the score required for sophomore level at that language. A CLEP exam covering the student's native language is acceptable.
• AP (Advanced Placement exams): A student can take AP exams in any of the languages taught in the department (including the student's native language). Depending on the score obtained on the AP, the student can obtain up to 12 (twelve) credits in that language, thus fulfilling the Foreign Languages requirement. Scores that merit less than 12 (twelve) credits will place the student in the appropriate course level.
• By successfully completing 6 (six) hours in a Foreign Language not previously studied.
• By successfully completing 6 (six) hours at the sophomore level in a Foreign Language previously studied for a minimum of one year.
• Three hours of a foreign language course not previously studied, and an additional significant foreign language experience which would be met by either:
  1. a summer language course in connection with an approved study abroad program; or
  2. any required business school course with a language component. A language component means some hands on experiential exposure to the importance of language in dealing across cultures such as simulations, role-playing exercises, or some similar interactive process. Production of a research paper for a grade which examines the role of language in business would also be acceptable.

Summary of Information Technology Proficiency Requirements

All students, with the exception of Fall 2010 first-time freshmen, must take the iCritical Thinking Test and obtain a passing score of 250. New Fall 2010 first-time freshmen will fulfill the Information Technology Proficiency Requirement as determined by each academic major department.
