Cap and Gown Distribution and Graduating Student Survey
Cap and gown distribution and the completion of your graduating student survey will take place in the Career Services Center, located in the Center for Life Directions, Monday, May 6 - Friday, May 10 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., excludes holidays and weekends. If you are unable to visit Civic Engagement and Career Development during business hours, contact Civic Engagement and Career Development Center at (210) 436-3102 or via e-mail at civicandcareer@stmarytx.edu to discuss alternative arrangements.
Please note that there is no extra charge for the cap, gown and tassel for bachelor's degree candidates or the cap, gown, tassel and hood for master's degree and Ph.D. candidates. When you pick up your cap and gown, simply present your Rattler ID, give your name, degree, and height. A graduation student survey is also conducted to obtain an outcome information for students at the time of graduation. All students picking up their cap and gown are expected to complete this confidential survey. Please make sure that you have no holds on your account.
Academic Apparel
Graduation Tassel Colors
The following is a list of colors established by the intercollegiate code to represent the different departments of learning:
| White | Humanities and Social Sciences |
| Gold Yellow | Science, Engineering, and Technology |
| Drab | Business Administration |
| Peacock Blue | Public Administration |
Graduation tassels are worn on the right hand side of cap. Following conferral of degree, place tassel on the left side of cap.
Hooding of Degree Candidates
St. Mary's University formally hoods the recipients of all Juris Doctor (Law), and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. For Master's degree candidates, hoods are worn as they enter the arena. For Doctor of Philosophy degree candidates, hoods are carried on their arm. The wording of the degree and not the department in which major work was done determines the color for the velvet trim on the hood. Therefore, the Master of Business degree requires the drab color of Business Administration; the Master of Science degree requires the gold-yellow of Science; the Master of Arts degree requires the white for Arts, Letters, and Humanities; and the Doctor of Philosophy degree requires the dark blue for Philosophy.
