WINGS Program

The Workers Invested in kNowledge and Growth through Service (WINGS) College Work-Study Program places federal work-study students with local non-profit and community partner organizations - particularly in the areas of education, elderly, health care, and legal services. In conjunction with the Office of Financial Assistance, the Civic Engagement and Career Development Center offers students the opportunity to take leadership and serve community partners on their majors, interests, and career goals.

As a member of this program, students provide direct service, recruit other student volunteers, attend training and development sessions, provide education to the university community about social issues related to their service work, and serve as on-site supervisors for other college student volunteers. The WINGS Program is a one-year commitment through which the student and the community partner become true partners to better serve local needs.

To become a WINGS member, students must:
  • Qualify for Federal Work-Study through financial aid
  • Complete a WINGS application
  • Have and maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA
  • Have access to reliable transportation
  • Commit to one academic year of work-study/service with a community partner
  • Attend mandatory meetings, mini-retreats, and other group-related activities throughout the year

Please click here for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the WINGS Program for students.

Interested students can complete a WINGS application and mail or fax it to the WINGS Program Supervisor, Chris Cantu, or email it to ccantu9@stmarytx.edu.

Upon receipt of the application, students should be prepared for an interview with the WINGS Program Supervisor. Once accepted into WINGS and all required forms have been completed with the Office of Financial Assistance and Human Resources, members can begin working with their chosen community partner.
