Tea and Book Presentation by Dr. Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill (Blog Entry)

Wednesday, March 4, 3:30-5pm, University Center, Conference Room B

Dr. Hill, an alumna and former faculty member of St. Mary’s University, will describe the process of production and publication, as well as the content, of this book. In this annotated diary, Sallie McNeill chronicles thoughts, observations, and details of her daily life during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. This remarkably well-preserved document tells McNeill's story from her days as a student in the female department of Baylor College at Independence until her death in 1867. McNeill's story - common to the era and place and still intensely personal - lets readers glimpse the numbing expectations of a young woman's proper behavior, moral referencing of those living under the influence of the second Great Awakening, intellectual questions posed by the education of the day, and the lifestyle of the planter class at the margins of its geographical reach. Published February 2009 by Texas A&M University Press. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and may be signed by the co-author. A brief description of the culture of tea by Dr. Camille Langston will be part of this event. Tea and refreshments will be served.

Egg Decorating Workshopdecorated eggs

Wednesday, March 18, Noon-1 pm; University Center, Faculty Lounge

The egg, symbol of life and renewal, is also a quintessential feminine symbol. Let's get together during Women's History Month and make some colorful eggs! They can be used as decorations for Easter, or as Christmas tree decorations, or simply as beautiful objects you can make yourself. These are made with real egg shells, paper (preferably Japanese, with very small print), white glue, and the last layer of polyurethane. Participants in the workshop are asked to bring at least one empty egg shell (instructions on how to empty it will be sent to you upon request), pencil, ruler, and scissors. If you have some favorite quality paper with very small print, bring it along. If not, you can use our paper. The workshop will take about 40 minutes. You won't be able to finish the eggs completely, because they need to dry for 24 hours before you apply the polyurethane. But you will have a very good idea how the egg will look once it is finished. These eggs are quite lovely and may be enjoyed for many years.Workshop conducted by Dr. Eva Bueno. Co-sponsored by the Languages Department and Women's History Month Committee.more decorated egss
