Student Managed Business
St. Mary's University proudly boasts our first student managed business, which is only one of a handful in the nation. Rattler Enterprises was created to give all students, not just business majors, a valuable hands-on learning experience of running a business. Students have the assistance of faculty adviser, but students manage every aspect of the business serving on the executive team in the roles of chief executive officer, directors of finance, marketing, human resources and operations. The executive team oversees the finances and also employs student employees thereby running a fully operational company.
Rattler Enterprises is the umbrella corporation that will eventually grow to include several business enterprises. The first division, TLC Tees, opened for business in spring 2010. TLC Tees designs and produces custom T-shirts for student and University organizations on St. Mary's campus. St. Mary's alumni Tom (B.B.A. ’88) and Leti (B.A. ’89) Contreras, which is where the name TLC comes from, made a generous donation to the Bill Greehey School of Business in order to help make this dream a reality for students. Rattler Enterprises provides custom printed apparel for student organizations, special events, and the surrounding community through our TLC Tees division. Our long-term plan is to expand the business to include other services such as engraving, embroidery, printing, and duplication.
Our main purpose is to provide the students at St. Mary's University with the unparalleled experience of managing a real corporation. Simulations and hypothetical situations have the ability to make students think, but we believe that this hands-on education will provide them with skills that can not be learned through other means. These skills will make a St. Mary’s degree competitive and sought after in the job market and provide our graduates with a unique advantage in their future careers.

What makes Rattler Enterprises unique among other student managed businesses is our mission to give back to the St. Mary’s community. All profits up to $200,000 will be reinvested in the business for expansion to give even more students an opportunity to participate, and any profits over that amount will be donated to scholarships and study abroad programs. These scholarships and programs will be available to students throughout the university, further expanding our reach to benefit the community.

Rattler Enterprises teamed up with the E-Scholars Program to provide every new CEO the opportunity to enroll in the E-Scholars program with their program fees waived. The common purpose of the two programs is to harness entrepreneurial spirit and generate and act upon new, innovative ideas. By working together, these two programs can achieve a higher level of hands on experience and involvement for St. Mary’s students.
