Mission Statement

The mission of the Greehey Scholars Program is to develop students who are examples of outstanding ethical leadership, technical excellence, global awareness and professional orientation, challenging them to the highest standards of commitment and achievement. Scholars set this example by engaging in the principles of constant learning, serving and leading, not only in business environments but also in their communities and whole lives.

For the past two years the program has provided me with countless learning opportunities that have allowed me to have a more clear understanding of the business world and what it requires to become an ethical and successful leader. By focusing on our personal development and community service the program has also helped me grow into a well-rounded person. It is by balancing classes, leadership activities, and civic engagement that I am continually becoming the person I have always aspired to be, and I hope to be the example of many to follow.
Sofia is a 3rd year Financial Service/Risk Management major.

Four Strategic Themes of the BGSB

As leaders in the Bill Greehey School of Business, each aspect of our activities as scholars emphasizes development in one or more of the strategic themes of our school:

  • Ethical Leadership
  • Technical Excellence
  • Global Awareness
  • Professional Orientation

Our Role in St. Mary's University

Being a Greehey Scholar goes beyond our classrooms, service sites and professional development events. As scholars, we are involved in every aspect of the St. Mary's community and campus. We live as leaders even when we're following; we work diligently and engage in the classroom, support and lead organizations and events, and even set an example for campus life in the residence halls.

Part of our commitment to servant leadership includes being actively involved in campus-wide service initiatives, partnering with the University's Service Learning Center. These sorts of initiatives are crucial in fostering a community that goes beyond the Greehey Scholars Program; working with students, faculty and staff from across St. Mary's allows us to establish strong bonds and connections to the university as a whole. We are involved in:

  • Continuing the Heritage: The largest service day involving St. Mary's students, faculty and staff, in which a number of organizations are served, including Ronald McDonald House, SA Food Bank, Roots of Change Community Gardens, SA Children's Shelter, and many more.
  • Habitat for Humanity St. Mary's Chapter: As part of a GSP group service initiative, the chapter was reinstated at our campus, made up of students and faculty from different majors and departments, coming together to help those in need of affordable housing.
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: As another GSP group initiative, students worked closely with faculty to revamp the training and recruitment processes for VITA volunteers from the St. Mary's and San Antonio community.

The GSP commitment to service, ethical leadership and values echoes St. Mary's foundation on Marianist charism of:

  • Faith formation
  • Integral quality education
  • Family spirit
  • Working for service, justice and peace
  • Adaptation and change

Diversity

Our program has been able to bring together diverse minds that create a rich environment to grow in, thanks to the accessibility of the GSP application process. Students from all over Texas, the U.S. and the rest of the world have chosen St. Mary's University as their collegiate home, each bringing something unique to the program.

Not only are we from different backgrounds, but we also enjoy a wide range of varied interests, passions, and strengths that help guide us to the various ways we hope to change the world: from working in non-profit organizations and attending law school to starting a company and teaching in the collegiate setting.

Evolving Program

A unique feature of the Greehey Scholars Program is that we, the scholars, are very involved in the program's growth and development. Since the creation of the program in 2005, the GSP has undergone constant improvement, changes initiated by our director as well as from the input and experiences of students. In-depth essays reflecting on the events of the year and an environment encouraging open and honest discussion between scholars and our director, Dr. Ward allow us to make this program our own.

As a Registered Student Organization, our group of scholars has a structure of officers who plan and organize events such as the GSP orientation, manage fundraising efforts, and work beside Dr. Ward to lead the scholars. Officers also elect chairpersons for committees to provide input and leadership opportunities for scholars in events like the service immersion trip.
