Meet the Scholars

Gladys Abieva

I am a graduate of Tashkent International School which is a small school in the very heart of Central Asia Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is warm, sunny, and one of the friendliest countries in Asia. In TIS I was involved in a variety of activities such as community service, Model United Nations, Yearbook and School Chamber Band. My interests include community service, reading, playing guitar, decorating, and writing.

I am double majoring in corporate finance and mathematics in the Bill Greehey School of Business at St. Marys University. I chose St. Marys because of its caring atmosphere, small classes, personal attention to every student and location. I am from a very hot country and staying in a warm climate means a lot to me. San Antonio seems to be a friendly and charismatic city and when I was coming I hoped that for four years it will become my new home. And really, I am already a sophomore and I can say that St. Mary's has become my home for the first several months and that there was no time when I was sorry about the choice I had made. Now I am involved in a variety of academic and social activities like the Neighborhood Revitalization, VITA, IB Club, and others. I feel myself an active part of St. Mary's University and feel proud of it.

The Greehey Scholars Program provides for me a variety of unique opportunities which I would never have had in Uzbekistan. Being a Greehey Scholar provides for me an exceptional combination of strong academics and real business world interactions. It is the combination of studying business and applying acquired skills at the same time that interests me. Being a part of the Greehey Scholars Program helps me to get closer to my dream to become a top financial manager. Being a Greehey Scholar is definitely one of the main steps on my way to success. I believe that years at St. Mary's will be a priceless experience for me. I also hope that I can share my National Uzbekistan experiences, culture and traditions with the St. Mary's community.

Honduras is a beautiful, exotic and warm country in Central America- I am lucky enough to have been born there. Even though I am from the city of San Pedro Sula, my family and I moved to Dallas (TX) and Tegucigalpa (Honduras) over a period of about 5 years. Having lived in 3 different cities and attended 4 different international schools has had a huge impact on my character; I've had friends from all over the world and have become much more open-minded when it comes to embracing different cultures. This is one of the reasons that made St. Mary's a great match for me- a diverse yet personal and friendly setting was just what I needed. Throughout high school, I was a member of the Varsity basketball and volleyball teams, becoming basketball co-captain and volleyball captain during my senior year. I was also an active member of the National Honor Society for 2 years, serving my school and community through educational projects. As Honduran law states, seniors must complete 144 hours of social work before graduating; this included eye-opening reforestation, educational and refurbishing projects for low-resource schools and communities. Aside from this, I enjoy anything music-related, reading, playing sports and writing. Any form of art is of huge interest to me as well; be it attending plays, concerts or art museums. Exploring new places is a big part of me; my dad grew up next to the beach and my mom is from a little Spanish-designed town. I have an older and a younger brother; we have been able to experience traveling to islands, mountains, beaches and have even gone white water rafting. My next big challenge is to discover San Antonio and St. Mary's University; I'm sure I will enjoy my time here and benefit from the Greehey Scholars Program immensely.

Brian Dinnie

This is my first year as a graduate student at St. Mary's as well as my first year residing in the San Antonio area. I have lived most of my life in Connecticut and as an undergraduate I achieved a BA degree in political science from the University of Connecticut. After graduation I engaged in extensive travel followed by ownership in a landscaping venture until I decided that pursuing study in business would be the next step in my education. On a chance excursion to San Antonio in the summer of 2007 an alumnus of St. Mary's told me about the University's MBA and Greehey Scholar programs. A year later I was driving down to Texas to stay. I have a focus in management and am planning to be involved in small business, non-profit, and/or academic fields after completing my degree. In the meantime I am enjoying getting to know the city and visiting the many state parks in the vicinity.

James Eades

I graduated from Westwood High School in the spring of 2007 with both a Distinguished Achievement Diploma from the state of Texas and an International Baccalaureate Diploma. I entered St. Mary's University in the fall of 2007 with thirty-nine hours of credit from the IB diploma and AP tests combined. Currently, I am a Junior by hours and I am working on a Entrepreneurial Studies Major in the Bill Greehey School of Business. The courses that I have taken thus far in the Bill Greehey School of Business have furthered my understanding of business and have assisted greatly in my entrepreneurial endeavors.

I own two businesses and am involved in a number of different programs on campus including the Greehey Scholars Program, and the Alpha Pi Chapter of Omega Delta Phi. The first business I started was a D.J. entertainment service. This business has been interesting and has provided me with many different learning experiences. The D.J. business has been provided many learning opportunities, but I am now working on a new business idea that involves creating a website where artists can sell their original works to anyone who wishes to purchase them. The website is currently being developed and will hopefully be operational by the end of the year. The Greehey Scholars Program has provided me with many opportunities to expand my knowledge of business beyond what I would have normally learned in a classroom environment, and I have enjoyed being a part of the program. I have always been interested in business and other activities, especially learning. I have enjoyed being a part of St. Mary's University and hope to continue learning after I leave its doors.

Rebecca Farrington

I am an only child, born and raised in Arlington, Texas. I attended Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, where I graduated in 2007 as an Amon Carter Scholar with Summa Cum Laude. Throughout my high school years, I played on the volleyball team, served as an officer in the National Honor Society, performed with the Dance Company, and earned membership in the Spanish Honor Society, International Thespian Society, and many other school clubs. I have danced in studios outside of school for ten years, and have been a leader in my church's youth group for about five. Many weekends I volunteered at the food pantry sponsored by my church, where I normally translated for our clients and kept track of our food supply. In 2004, I served as a host teen for the Ulster Project's branch in Arlington, and have been involved with the organization ever since. I chose St. Mary's University not only for its size, ideal location, and powerful programs, as any brochure may aptly advertise, but also for the Catholic and Marianist traditions, which were strong in my high school as well.

Here at St. Mary's, I am a member of the Greehey Scholars Program and Honors Program, and I intend to double-major in International Business and Spanish. During my freshman year, I became active in University Ministry, Rattler Recruiters, and Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed service fraternity. Off-campus, I volunteered with the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center as well, as with St. Anthony Claret Catholic Parish as an assistant teacher for Confirmation classes. That following summer I served as a Student Orientation Assistant at freshman orientations. This sophomore year I am continuing these activities as well as adding my membership of St. Mary's Code Blue Dance Team.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the events I've experienced and the lessons I've learned through the Greehey Scholars Program thus far. I am greatly looking forward to what the future has in store for all of us, and I wish all of my fellow students the best of luck in these upcoming years.

Megan Haley

I am a graduate of Health Careers High School of San Antonio, which is a small magnet school in the medical center area. I am the middle child and only daughter in my family of five, and both my parents own their own businesses. Currently, I am pursuing a marketing degree in the Bill Greehey School of Business here at St. Mary's University. I chose St. Mary's for its small class sizes, which are very similar to my high school, and for its proximity to my home and family. I must admit, receiving the Greehey Scholarship influenced my decision quite a bit! Some of my interests include music (I play acoustic guitar and piano), traveling, reading, dancing to Spanish music, Adobe Photoshop, organizing/attending social events with friends, and being active in my congregation's ministry work. I've benefited from numerous volunteer opportunities, most recently reading to kindergarten students at Eduardo Villarreal Elementary School. I have enjoyed my first two years at St. Mary's immensely and am eager to continue my studies as a junior this year. Kristina Lindsey

Born and raised in Southeast Texas, I was hesitant to head off to college five hours away; however, after spending a year at St. Mary's University, I am confident I made the right decision. I am a 2007 graduate of Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont, TX where I was extremely active in service-oriented as well as in leadership organizations. Additionally, I have always been interested in dance, scrapbooking and reading. I am the second daughter of four children and I am extremely family-oriented. My parents, Gerald and Sheila Lindsey, and my siblings, Melissa, Danielle, and Gerald have always supported my goals and ambition.

I was honored to be selected for the Greehey Scholars Program last year and am looking forward to the coming events for the 2008-2009 academic year. In the past year, the Greehey Scholars Program has given me several opportunities to exercise and expand my leadership skills and abilities through our weekly seminars, business interaction program, lecture series, and more. Additionally, I was able to begin my individual service project, creating "Blankets for Babies," -- to provide the children's orphanage in Piedras Negras, Mexico, with personalized blankets-- with support from the GSP. This year I will be working with The Children's Shelter and Seton Homes. Other service ventures we participated in as a group were the VITA program, the Ronald McDonald House dinners, and Continuing the Heritage. This past summer, I was afforded the opportunity to take an internship with the Hyatt Regency San Antonio, and I look forward to continuing there part-time during the year. I've discovered the opportunities at St. Mary's, especially within in the Bill Greehey School of Business are endless and I am honored to be a part of its developing Greehey Scholars Program.

Shannon Lowry

I am an Entrepreneurial Studies major here at St. Mary's, and with this degree, I plan to one day open and run my own business, in either the hospitality or fashion industry. I am a San Antonio native and graduated in 2006 from Communications Arts High School. I joined the Greehey Scholars Program because of the many opportunities it will provide me, the community I find with my peers, and the devotion to service that is integral to success. Additionally, I am involved in the St. Mary's University Marianist Leadership Program and currently serve as the President of the SIFE organization.

Leslie Lu

I was born in Alice, Texas, but my family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where I grew up. I have attended private school my entire life, and last spring I graduated from Incarnate Word Academy. Music has been a big part of my life, and I have studied the piano since the first grade, while competing and performing in places such as Carnegie Hall in New York and other parts of the state. Although music was a major part of my life, I was very active in school activities throughout High School. During my senior year I was an officer in the National Honor Society and Student Council and member of Mu Alpha Theta, a school organization for students who excel in Math. I was also an active member in various clubs, such as Science Club. Beginning my sophomore year, I became a part of the missionary program at my high school; we would spend ten days during spring break to travel down into rural Mexico to teach villagers about God and celebrate mass with them. I was chosen to be a village leader my senior year; my experience as a leader and a missionary have shaped my goals for the future. As a Greehey Scholar and an Honors student here at St. Mary's University, I hope to major in International Business and use my degree promote global awareness. I'm very thankful for the opportunity to study in a Catholic environment, and I look forward to the many experiences that the business school will provide me with.

Lindsay Magaro

I grew up on a family ranch in Elmendorf, Texas, a small town right outside of San Antonio. Growing up on a ranch was sometimes challenging, but it taught me the value of hard work, perseverance and dedication. My family was also involved with the San Antonio Italian community, so I also learned the spirit of volunteerism and a sense of being part of a unique culture. I graduated from Incarnate Word High School in 2003, where I excelled in both academia and sports. I received awards in Physics and Biology, TAPPS art competition and served as the captain of the cross country, basketball, and softball teams. These experiences reinforced my values in sportsmanship, team, and competition. After graduating high school there was no doubt of that I was committed to attending St. Mary's University. Not only is St. Mary's a family tradition's my grandfather, mother, father, brother, sister-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins attended St. Mary's but the school displays the values that I had come to cherish in life.

While enrolled as an undergraduate at St. Mary's I participated in the President's Ambassadors, Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. I was also a member of the Rattler Softball Team where I served as the captain and earned All-Conference and All-Region honors. My involvement in St. Mary's taught me unique time management and leadership skills. In addition, I had the chance to study abroad in Germany and Austria. These trips taught me the true meaning of a global environment. I graduated from St. Mary's in May 2008 with a degree in Risk Management and Financial Services. During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a student intern for the Risk Management Office of Southwest Research Institute. I pursued the continuation of my education and applied for and was accepted as a Greehey Scholar in the MBA program at St. Mary's University. My life experiences, social volunteerism, academic pursuits and athletic activities have provided me a wide breadth of skills, knowledge and abilities to which I am grateful to many of my family, teachers and coaches, as well as those who have served as mentors and advisors. It demonstrates not necessarily what I accomplished, but what anybody can accomplish given the internal drive and opportunity to do so.

Francine Masso

I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras although my mom is Cuban and my dad is Arab. I have two younger brothers and one little sister. I attended the American School of Tegucigalpa and graduated as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate in May 2008. In high school I was a member of the National Honor Society, The Spanish Honor Society, the cheerleading squad and the Habitat for Humanity club where I served as president. Here in St. Mary;s I am a member of the Greehey Scholars Program and the Honors Program. Being selected as a Greehey Scholar along with the university;s size and location greatly influenced my decision to attend St. Mary's. Although I am currently a General Business major, I am very interested in Finance and Economics. I intend to participate as an active member of the program and hope to make the best of my experience as a Greehey Scholar.

Lori Mayfield

I was born and raised in Victoria, Texas and am a 2008 graduate of St. Joseph High School. At St. Joseph, I served as Chaplain of my school's chapter of the National Honor Society, Treasurer of our Government club, Secretary of Student Council during both my junior and senior years, and was actively involved in community service ranging from helping at the Salvation Army to going on an Immersion Trip to the Zuni Reservation in New Mexico. I was also involved in the Marianist Life Community at my school, and I will continue that service in the Marianist Leadership Program here at St. Mary's. During my high school years, I played volleyball and soccer and was Captain of our State Champion Girls powerlifting team.

Being the youngest and only girl in the family with five brothers, one biological and four stepbrothers, I have learned how very important the love and support of a family is. My hobbies include working out, going hunting and fishing with my dad, shopping with my mom (of course -- what girl doesn't like to shop?!), and spending time with close friends.

I chose St. Mary's University because it is a Catholic institution that upholds the same outstanding academic and moral standards that my high school did. The small class sizes and personal attention I will be receiving from professors also attracted me to this university. The environment provided at St. Mary's will help me to grow in every way possible way whether that be through strengthening my faith or excelling in academics. I am an undecided business major in the Greehey School of Business and am ecstatic about being a part of the Greehey Scholars Program. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to be involved in GSP, and I believe that this experience will help me to be successful in this ever changing world as a business professional. Most importantly though, I will use the knowledge gained from the Greehey Scholars Program to serve others to the best of my ability.

Lyla Moon

I graduated as Summa Cum Laude from Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City in the spring of 2007. While at Classen, I majored in piano, took a number of ceramics classes, and lived for Student Council. I have lived in Oklahoma City for my entire life, but travel frequently with my parents, K.C. and Jane, and little brother, Carsen. During this summer, however, I lived in an apartment in San Antonio with some good friends, and I worked at The Cheesecake Factory as a Baker (although, secretly, all of the cheesecakes are shipped in frozen)! I currently work at Frost Bank as a Teller and believe it is the best job I've ever had. I am a General Business major and am working to obtain a career in Accounting/Personal Banking at a major finance organization. I am incredibly grateful for the chance to serve within and learn from the Greehey Scholars Program, and look forward to the many opportunities it offers. In my spare time I enjoy traveling and the experience of meeting new people, drinking good coffee, reading, meditating (but not sitting still), spending a ridiculous amount of time outside, and riding my bike.

Bret Peters

Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, I graduated from Independent High School in the spring of 2007. Being the middle son of three boys, family and community have always been vital parts of my life. Active in sports throughout high school, I excelled at football, basketball, and track, as well as coaching a sixth grade basketball team. My involvement in community service has made me realize how fulfilling helping others can be and I look forward to continuing this at St. Mary's. By working during the summers as a supervisor at The Wichita Country Club pool and gazebo, I was able to interact with many successful businesspeople in the community. My first year as a Greehey Scholar has assured me that St. Mary's University is where I will be able to continue a life of service, leadership, and excellence. My second year in the program will undoubtedly bring me the knowledge and resources needed to complete the numerous goals and ambitions I have set for myself.

Rebecca Prada

I graduated from Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas class of 2008. I was very involved in a number of extra curricular activities, including Yearbook, Newspaper and Choir just to name a few. For the past two years I was Business Manager for both the Yearbook and Newspaper, which pretty much meant I had to make sure they both got paid for as well as making all the ads that went in. I was born in New Orleans, but lived there for only a few months. I studied in El Paso, Texas and lived what time I had left with my father in La Paz, Bolivia. I danced for many years and continue to be a part of the "Entrada Universitaria" in Bolivia which is a parade of all the traditional dances of Bolivia. I also enjoy singing, playing soccer and traveling. Sports and music are my passion. I can't express my gratitude for having been accepted into this program. It is an incredible opportunity. I am ready to give my all.

Sarah Roche

I was born in San Antonio to John and Linda Roche. I have one younger sibling. A few years ago I moved north to a small town named Blanco where I received my diploma from Blanco High School in Spring 2007. I will be declaring a major this year, and I am leaning toward marketing at the current time. This program has been a great networking tool, along with exposing me to business environments of all sorts. Because of the program, I have found my love for volunteer work and helping others learn. I am hoping to go on to receive my doctorate so that I can become a professor. I enjoy participating in the American Marketing Association, yoga, traveling, and reading.

Cassandra Stefanovic

I am a sophomore working on earning a Bachelor Degree in Engineering Management. My parents are Cynthia and Matthew Stefanovic, and I have one sibling, Richard. I do miss them when I am away from Glendale, Arizona. However, I am now proud to call San Antonio and St. Mary's University my home away from home. Thus far I have been quite active in the Greehey Scholars Program and in the Honors Program. The Honors Program provides me with a view into the theatrical and cultural community here in San Antonio. The Greehey Scholars Program on the other hand educates me further about the business world that I am to one day join. In the past year at St. Mary's University, I have also participated in service work at the Humane Society of Bexar County as well as at the VITA Program operated by the Bill Greehey School of Business and the Law School of St. Mary's. These activities enabled me to give back to the community that I am receiving so much from. There is still a lot to be done in my time here, such as finishing my degree program, learning more about this community, and possibly even attending a Spurs game.

Tami Tydlacka

I was born in Bryan/College Station on February 12, 1988. As one of four children in a loving and tight-knit family, I was raised in Huntsville, TX and attended school there until I graduated from Huntsville High School with honors in May 2006.

During high school, I was overly involved and enjoyed staying busy as I was part of multiple academic and service clubs and organizations, as well as varsity sports, while managing to make and keep exceptional grades. Community service has always been important to me, as I racked up more than 200 hours during high school, and continue to commit myself to helping my community through the Greehey Scholars Program.

From the age of 5, one of my greatest passions has been sports, as I focused the majority of my free-time playing volleyball, soccer, and running track, my dedication paid off as I became very successful in each of the three, earning spots on the varsity volleyball, soccer, and track teams in high school. I still enjoy staying active and playing recreational sports today.

I was a charter-member of the Greehey Scholars Program when I entered St. Mary's University as a freshman in August 2006, and am currently a junior in the Bill Greehey School of Business at StMU, and a third-year student in the Greehey Scholars Program. My passion and enthusiasm for business only continues to grow as I learn and experience more and more through this scholars program. I am an Entrepreneurial Studies major and would love to create and own several small businesses of my own in the very near future, ranging from the restaurant/service industry to the retail clothing industry. I am expecting to finish my undergraduate studies in May 2010 and will most likely go on to graduate school to earn my Masters in Business.

Chris Vinson

My name is Chris Vinson and I transferred to St. Mary's University in the Fall of 2007. I previously attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM where I was close to home and family. I was originally born in Irving, TX but my family moved to El Paso when I was relatively young, so I consider it my home. I graduated from Coronado High School where I played Baseball and ran Track & Field. My mother teaches 5th grade and my father is a computer technician. I have always been interested in knowing how things work, so after a high school Physics class with a great professor I decided to become a Mechanical Engineer. After a year, I found that was not the career choice I wanted so I now indulge my curiosity with learning how business works studying Finance and Accounting. I am honored to be part of the Greehey Scholars Program in addition to the benevolent community of St. Mary's University. Thus far, I am impressed with the program for a myriad of reasons and remain confident that I will continue to find new ways to thrive. Moving to San Antonio turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.

Sara Wilkinson

I am a 2008 graduate of Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, where I have lived my entire life. I am the daughter of Steve and Amy Wilkinson, and I am blessed to have an older brother who is working through four years of ROTC at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to serve as an officer in the US Navy. The most important relationship I have is with Jesus Christ, and I look forward to using my future accounting degree for his glory. In high school, I was very involved with First United Methodist Church and its youth leadership team, having the opportunity to serve as an intern with my youth pastor during the fall of 2007 and summer of 2008. I have volunteered in many different ways in my community, but having a passion for my brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted around the world, one of my highest goals was to raise money and awareness for Voice of the Martyrs, an organization that supports the underground church. In high school, I ran and pole-vaulted for the varsity cross-country and track teams and also participated in the National Honor Society and my school district's superintendent advisory council. I am excited about and extremely grateful for the opportunities the Greehey Scholars Program will offer me, not only in the business world but also in service. I aim to continue at St. Mary's University to earn a Master of Business Administration along the accounting track in order to take and pass the CPA exam. Eventually, I hope to use these degrees to combine my love of numbers and business with my passion for missions in working for a Christian non-profit organization.

Rebecca Brune

After earning my MPA from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and working in New York briefly, I returned to home to San Antonio, Texas. Although relatively young, I feel like I've had several careers! My first career was in the area of public relations and marketing. However, for the past six years, I've been involved in the design, implementation and advocacy of asset development programs. During this time, I have conducted asset-building and financial literacy training programs in Arizona, California, Georgia and Texas. In addition, I have tried to combine my passion for travel with my professional objectives by spending time in Nicaragua, India, and Bangladesh researching and comparing sustainable development and micro-lending programs. Currently, I am Director of Family Self-Sufficiency for the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. As Director, I work with a broad range of community and business coalitions to assist working families expand economic opportunities that will enable them to build financial assets.

My goal in enrolling in the Greehey School of Business is to gain the knowledge and expertise which I can then use to assist nonprofits become more financially and operationally sustainable. I believe that participation in the Greehey Scholars Program will provide me with the knowledge and experiences that will enable me to become a more effective social entrepreneur. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, camping, hiking, gardening and traveling!

I was born in San Francisco in 1982 and since then I have lived in many different states across the United States including Houston, Pittsburgh, Kalamazoo, and San Antonio, to name a few. I graduated from Aiken High School in 2000 and decided to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas. While my original plan was to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics, I triple majored in Economics, French and German. I was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority and served on the executive board in the position of secretary, and in 2004 was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. While at Baylor, I decided to pursue a juris doctor. I loved the San Antonio area and chose St. Mary's School of Law. During the first year of my juris doctor, I decided to also pursue an MBA. I wanted to pursue an MBA because I would like to work in the legal department of an international organization. I began analyzing the benefits and disadvantages of pursuing the degrees separately or simultaneously. I was determined to pursue the degrees jointly once I visited the Bill Greehey School of Business. I liked the atmosphere, the availability of the professors and the class size. Receiving a position as a Greehey Scholar will enhance my experience at the Greehey School of Business, as well as allowing me to meet and interact witih many successful business leaders in the community.

When I am not in class I like to read, travel, learn foreign languages and spend time with my family. I have studied abroad in France and Australia. I can speak French and German and am slowly learning Italian.

I was born in the thriving metropolis of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. As the youngest of four children from a military family, I spent ten years of my youth in Quantico, Virginia. When my father retired from the military, our family moved to Houston, Texas. I attended Westbury high school in southwest Houston. As a funny anecdote, my brother used to give me a quarter if I would play him a game of chess. He promised to give me fifty cents if I won. I decided I might as well make the most of this wager so I checked a book out from the library and the rest they say is history. I was the National Junior Speed Chess Champion in 1990. I won over twenty games in a row including defeating Joshua Watkins, the young man portrayed in the movie, Searching for Bobby Fischer.

I attended college at Texas A&M University where I worked three jobs to put myself through school. By the end of schooling, I had worked my way through the ranks of Bus Operations at Texas A & M University to become the Assistant Manager for daily operations. Managing the evaluation team and more than 300 college student bus drivers has given me a tremendous amount of interaction and perspective which I will carry with me for the rest of my life. After graduating, I worked for the Boy Scouts of America professionally for four years. One of the best experiences of my life was to serve as a Camp Director of Cockrell River Camp. With over 100 staff members living on site twenty four hours a day as well as 1,000 customers weekly and revenues in excess $700,000 it was an exciting summer being surrounded by and mentoring some of the best youth in America. Additionally that summer, 2002, we had the great flood and it was stressful yet satisfying to see that our contingency planning had worked as no person was injured. It should be noted one college student staff member did lose a car in the Blanco River.

From the Boy Scouts of America, I moved to San Antonio to work as a Project Manager for Trans-Tex Fabricating Co., Inc. After three years, I had become technically proficient in all aspects of intra and inter business operations of a small company with revenue between two and ten million dollars a year. I am currently pursuing a joint Juris doctor and Masters of Business Administration degree here at St. Mary's University. As a Greehey Scholar, I look forward to interacting and keeping in touch with the business community. When I have completed my joint degree it is my intention to work in the business community for a few years before starting my own company. I know being a Greehey Scholar will provide me an opportunity to interact with those business leaders in our community who have been very successful.

I was born in Memphis, attended grade school at St. Patrick's in North Little Rock, Arkansas and then moved to St. Louis where I attended junior high. Both of my parents worked for SBC and we moved to San Antonio when the corporate headquarters relocated in the early '90s. At the time, the moves were hard, but in retrospect, they provided good life experiences. Throughout school I played baseball, basketball and soccer and I still maintain a passion for all sports. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002 with a major in English and a minor in Business. While at UT, I played intramural sports, had a paid internship for GSDM Advertising and also enjoyed doing some volunteer reporting for the campus television station.

After graduation I worked for nearly three years in the Business Sales organization of SBC Communications. In that capacity I sold communications solutions to businesses in the Dallas area and represented the company at numerous chamber of commerce and other community functions.

Our sales group focused on winning new customers to SBC from our competitors. One distinction I'm proud to have achieved during this time was being the first of my peers or bosses to pass the Cisco CSE test and become CSE certified. This was very helpful in our highly technical work environment.

I'm now married to my lovely wife Megan and have a beautiful five month old daughter named Harper. I am very proud to be a part of St. Mary's University graduate school and to have been accepted as a Greehey Scholar.

The youngest of four children, from a large extended family of creative entrepreneurs, I have been exposed to the benefits and importance of small business in our society from an early age.

As a native Texan, born and raised in San Antonio, staying in San Antonio for my college and graduate education was an easy decision. I graduated from St. Mary's University in May, 2007, with a bachelor's degree in Entrepreneurial Studies and a minor in Spanish. During my undergraduate years, I studied abroad in England and Spain, and discovered a passion for travel. My free time was devoted to work, volunteering at my church and raising funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I was honored to be selected for the first Entrepreneurial Scholars class at St. Mary's. As part of the program, we visited New Orleans and China for exposure to business practices here and abroad. Through my travels I have developed a great appreciation for the role of business in the global community. As the president of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), our team represented St. Mary's at the regional competition in Dallas in April, 2007. I am a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, a business fraternity and Phi Eta Sigma, a freshman honor society.

My Lebanese heritage and culture are expressed through dancing and cooking, and I have participated at the Texas Folklife Festival for 18 years with the St. George Lebanese Folkdancers. I orchestrated the creation of the local chapter of the Maronite Young Adults for my parish, and co-founded the non-profit organization Drums of Grace, which raises funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Many of my ambitions involve owning my own business. For the past five years, I worked with my father in our family-owned business. As Operations Manager of our company, it is an ideal laboratory for me to practice and perfect what I have learned in class. I look forward to taking my place in the entrepreneurial world with the knowledge I gain as a Greehey Scholar.

Bobby Mogford

I graduated from Texas A&M University in 1998. While at Texas A&M I was very active in many organizations and also intramural sports. I was a member of the Texas A&M Quiz Bowl team that traveled around the US and Canada competing against other universities. In addition, I was a member of the Alpha Zeta Honor Fraternity, Business Administration Society, and also President of the Puryear Hall council.

During the past eight years, I have had many different experiences in the business world. I was a commodities trader for Cargill, Inc. I was also part of a team that started a new internet trading company in San Antonio called Worldmerc, Inc. Being the third person hired enabled me to learn how to build a business from the ground up. I had the pleasure of learning how to write business plans, deal with angel investors, venture capitalists, and then manage the funding that we received. I am currently employed with Enterprise Rent-A-Car as an area manager.

During my 6 years in San Antonio I have been involved with many different organizations. I am very active in raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society for their annual MS150. In addition, I have been active with the SAHLA association, CASA association, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the ERAC North West Founding Values Committee. My ultimate goal would be to have the opportunity to one day donate a large sum of money, as did Bill Greehey, to help others achieve their dreams. By earning a MBA from St Mary's University, it will enable me to continue moving up the ranks at Enterprise Rent-A-Car to one day run the company as CEO. It is definitely an honor and a privilege to be apart of the Greehey Scholars Program.

In the beginning of 2002 I entered the Department of Economics at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. I obtained my Bachelor and Master degree with distinction among the top students. At the end of my Bachelor Program I had an internship at marketing agency SIREX where I was analyzing trends in radio broadcasting. I also worked for KINTO, Kyiv-based asset management company, as a financial analyst for utilities sector.

Being one of the best Master Students I was proposed to enroll in a Master Program in International Business and Economics as a part of exchange program between Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University and Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. All my expectations about Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences were surpassed. In addition to a great experience which I had in Germany I have received an opportunity to enroll in MBA program at St. Mary's University as a part of joined-degree program between Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences and Bill Greehey School of Business. And even more, I was honored to be a Greehey Scholar. I believe that my knowledge and experience received while being a part of Bill Greehey Scholars Program will enable me not only to have a bright and successful career but also to make a valuable contribution to society's development.

I am originally from Victoria, Texas graduating from St. Joseph High School in 2003, sixth in my class. I just graduated from St. Mary's University this past May, 2007. I obtained my undergraduate degree in accounting, graduating with the honors of cum laude. I was active in several organizations at St. Mary's including the Marianist Leadership Program, Rattler Awakening, and Chi Phi Fraternity. I am also a member of Order of Omega and Gamma Sigma Alpha Greek honor societies. I began working an internship at Tsakopulos, Brown, Schott and Anchors, CPAs, P.C. during the spring semester of my Junior year. I continued my experience there through graduation and am now a staff accountant and auditor for the local firm. I hope to one day become a respected businessman in the San Antonio area. I also enjoy the outdoors with activities such as hunting, fishing, sport shooting, and boating.

The experiences and opportunities I've had at STMU convinced me, without a doubt, that I should continue to pursue a Master's degree at this institution as well. The intense family aura that is present with the faculty, alumni, and other affiliates presents a very welcoming learning environment. I'm extremely excited to be in the Greehey Scholars Program with all of the opportunities it presents. I'm also excited to be able to go back to school full time for the one-year MBA program.

Kyle St.Clair

I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas where I have lived for 24 years. I am two years older than my only brother who is also my best friend. I grew up in a close-knit family environment learning the importance of family and giving to others.

I spent many weekends fishing, hunting and playing golf with my dad who has enjoyed a 29 year career with AT&T. Following in the footsteps of my grandfather, who served as its President for many years, my dad is actively involved in the leadership of the labor union that represents AT&T employees. My middle-class working roots, union background, and extensive management education, gives me a well rounded and unique perspective on business and its relationship with the work force.

I attended Bryan Adams High School where I excelled in both academics and sports. I served as captain of the golf team and was voted MVP my junior year when we won our district tournament. After graduation, I went on to attain an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Dallas in business management with honors. While there, I participated in the Academic Bridge Program, a new and rapidly growing program that assists freshmen to adjust and smoothly transition into college from urban city public schools such as Bryan Adams.

With the guidance of some important mentors and my natural drive to create a challenge, I made the decision to pursue my J.D. /M.B.A., which is how I learned of the Greehey Scholar Program. I was drawn to the program not only because of the assistance provided to full-time students but also the extraordinary opportunity to meet with the most influential business men and women in the San Antonio community. I hope to make life long friends and business relationships during the next three years as I complete my degrees. So far, San Antonio, St. Mary's, and the Greehey Scholar Program have been an unbelievable experience, which proves more exciting and challenging every day. Thank you to all who have made my move to a new community seamless. I truly feel at home at St. Mary's.

I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, with my three brothers. I have had a variety of academic experiences along the way so far: I was homeschooled through high school, and in my senior year I began taking dual-credit courses at Northwest Vista. While at Northwest Vista I became a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and graduated in 2006.

After transferring to St. Mary's University and taking classes from several majors, I decided to major in accounting because it is both interesting and challenging to me. While at St. Mary's, I became a member of Beta Gamma Sigma in 2007. During the summer of 2007 I had the opportunity to study abroad in Schmalkalden, Germany. While there I took several classes centered on doing busin ess in a global environment. I was able to do an internship at a large corporation in San Antonio during the summer of 2008. I learned an incredible amount as an intern, and it helped me narrow down my career choices.

In my free time I enjoy making all kinds of desserts, and creating new recipes. I have loved making crafts since I was young, and this has influenced my service projects with the Greehey Scholars Program over the past year. I also enjoy reading, and volunteering with the children at my church. The Greehey Scholars Program has motivated me to succeed academically, and I look forward to what will happen in the future.

Before I arrived in San Antonio, I lived and studied in Shanghai, China. There are three people in my family. We also have a tortoise, which is living with us for more than ten years. I like watching documentaries, reading, traveling and painting in my leisure time. It is a brand-new beginning for me to come to St. Mary's. The university impressed me as a warm environment and a professional institution. I look forward to meeting many people, and being involved in and serving the community. I completed an internship at GE Healthcare and Hewitt Associates. As an undergraduate, my major is financial planning. I hope I can combine my knowledge and experience to guide my future career.
