For many students being in college means that you are away from your family and on your own. As a freshman, moving away from home and starting college is a huge transition. You have to learn your way around, figure out which teachers you should take and discover your own way. For freshman Ariel Ornelas, this scenario was very different. Ariel came to St. Mary´s University this year as a member of the Rattler cross country team and an ambitious biology major. Unlike most freshmen going to school far from home, Ariel was not alone. Her big sister, Michelle Ornelas, is a senior at St. Mary´s and was able to help her out along the way.2009-10-09 Author: Derek Smolik

Head Coach Corwyn M. Ritch
Corwyn Ritch is in his ninth year as the head coach of the St. Mary's women's soccer team and is the program's all-time leader in coaching victories.
Ritch has helped the Rattler women's soccer program become one of the top programs in the Heartland Conference, posting a record of 77-64-14 over his tenure at the school, including the Heartland Conference title in 2002. He has had just two losing seasons in seven years and the team has reached 10 or more wins five times.
In 2007 Ritch had perhaps his best coaching job, leading the team to a 9-10-1 record, despite injuries that crippled his team. The Rattlers lost seven starters over the course of the season and had both goalkeepers injured. Even so the Rattlers were still able to compete with the best in the South Central Region. They posted wins over Texas A&M-Commerce, Angelo State and nearly scored an upset of Division I Texas-El Paso, falling by just a 2-1 count. The Rattlers had five players earn All-Heartland recognition.
In 2005 the Rattlers went 13-6-1 and finished runner-up in the Heartland race. Kyle Hyslop, Kennie Boxill and Deann Lopez all earned All-Heartland Conference for their play.
During his time in San Antonio, Ritch has helped to produce 17 All-Heartland Conference honorees, including one Player of the Year and one Goalkeeper of the Year.
Ritch earned Heartland Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2002 after his team went 13-7-1 and won the Heartland Conference Championship. In his first season as coach, he led the Rattlers to a 10-6-2 record and an appearance in the Heartland Tournament Championship. The team ranked as high as 23rd in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) polls and placed second in the Heartland Conference.
In 2004 the Rattlers won the Heartland Conference regular season title and advanced to the tournament championship game thanks to a 10-8-2 overall record.
During the 2001 and 2002 seasons, Ritch also served as head coach for the Rattler men's soccer team and posted a 22-15-3 record during that time, including a pair of Heartland Conference finals appearances.
Ritch played for St. Mary's from 1990-1994. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at St. Mary's with a minor in chemistry. He has since acquired his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National Coaching License.
Following his graduation, Ritch coached the men's club team at Our Lady of the Lake University and the boy's varsity team at Southwest High School in San Antonio. He has trained players in various age groups and settings including individual sessions, camps, and club teams. Ritch was the trainer for the San Antonio Strikers Soccer Club '84 and '85 teams as well as the Lady Lions '86 Club team. He was the assistant men's and women's soccer coach at St. Mary's for 2000 and is currently director of the Total Soccer Camp.
Assistant Coach Marcelo Gomez
Marcelo Gomez is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Rattlers, working with the goalkeepers.
In 2008 he was tasked with managing two freshmen goalkeepers with no collegiate experience. Despite their relative inexperience, Roxana Carrasco and Brittany Sullivan each earned Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors and showed great improvement over the course of the season.
The 2007 season was the perfect one for the Rattlers for Gomez to start working. The team started the season with two freshmen goalkeepers and injuries to both forced Gomez to work with field players to fill in. Even with the turnovers in goal, the Rattlers still allowed a respectable 2.04 goals per game and had four shutouts on the season.
Gomez, who is originally from Chile, joined the Rattler family after working as a coach in Mexico for several professional soccer teams.
Prior to coming to San Antonio, Gomez worked with several teams in Mexico. He worked with the girl's soccer team at Saint Francis Episcopal from 2000 to 2005. He also worked as a coach for the Futbol Club Union men's soccer team from 2003 to 2005.
While in Mexico he worked as a personal goalkeeper coach to several professional soccer players, including Cesar Tadeo and Sebastian Enoch, who both played in the Liga Mexicana, the top professional soccer league in Mexico.
He worked with several national soccer teams around the world, including the teams from Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Finland, Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Ecuador and England. He also worked with professional soccer teams from Mexico and Argentina.
He played for Chile's under-18 national team. He also played professional soccer in the United States from 1981 to 1985.
He is married to Gabriela Jimenez, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico. Gomez has two children, Stephanie (17) and Sebastian Marcelo (1).
