Romero, Marczewski Named Heartland Academic Players of the Week

Senior Michelle Romero was honored by the Heartland Conference on Wednesday for her work in the classroom and on the field.

SAN ANTONIO—St. Mary’s University student-athletes Michelle Romero of the women’s soccer team, and Marcin Marczewski of the men’s tennis team were honored by the Heartland Conference as Academic Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Romero (Sr., El Paso, Texas) has been one of the Rattlers top all-around student-athletes over the last four years. On the field, she is one of the top defensive players in the Heartland Conference. She has played in 74 games over the last four years, including all 18 this season. Last Friday in Laredo, Romero scored her first career goal against Texas A&M-International. Prior to that game she had just one career point, an assist against Northeastern State in 2008. Off the field she has been equally impressive. She has a 3.69 grade point average, majoring in interdisciplinary readings. She has earned Heartland Conference President's Honor Roll recognition all three of her years at St. Mary's.

Marczewski (So., Warsaw, Poland) has followed up his outstanding freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign. He had a 7-1 record during the fall season, including two wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament, in which he advanced to the Round of 16. He also helped lead the Rattlers to a perfect 2-0 record in team competition during the fall. During the 2009 spring season, Marczewski was the Rattlers top player, competing at number one and two singles. He went 15-4 in singles and 11-8 in doubles to lead the Rattlers in wins for both. He was named All-Heartland Conference for his play. Off the court, he earned Heartland Conference President's Honor Roll recognition last season, finishing with a 3.67 grade point average in Engineering Management.

Romero and the Rattler women’s soccer team will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Edward’s University in the final match of the 2009 season. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s University soccer field. Marczewski and the Rattler men’s tennis team are finished for the fall. They will return to action on Feb. 12, when they host the University of the Incarnate Word at the St. Mary’s tennis courts.
