This Week in St. Mary´s Athletics

SAN ANTONIO—The St. Mary’s University women’s soccer and volleyball teams will each host a pair of Heartland Conference games this week, while the softball team will host the annual alumni tournament Saturday in Rattler athletics action.

The softball team will welcome back many of its greatest players for the 13th annual alumni softball game. Among the former student-athletes expected to be in attendance are pitchers Malissa Magee, Kim Kling and Leticia Morales-Bissaro, as well as sluggers Kelcy Walker, Lindsay Barnes and Liz Beyer. The game will be played at Rattler Field on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Over the weekend the St. Mary’s Soccer Field saw rain, cold temperatures and lots of action. On Friday the Lady Rattler’s soccer team hosted the University of the Incarnate Word and gave the 18th-ranked Cardinals all they could handle in a 1-0 loss. On Sunday the Rattlers came back strong, producing a 3-0 victory over Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference play. After a scoreless first half, Michal Ravitz (Jr., Kiryat Bialik, Israel) came back in the second half and scored her first goal as a Rattler paving the way for the Rattlers to score two more goals in less than eight minutes. With the win, St. Mary's improved to 2-9-1 overall and 2-3-0 in Heartland Conference play this season. The Rattlers will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 15, when they host the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at 3 p.m. and Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at St. Mary's Soccer Field.

Inside Bill Greehey Arena the volleyball team had its most dominating match of the season, rolling past Texas A&M International, 25-22, 25-18, 25-17, in volleyball action Friday night. With the win, St. Mary’s ended a six-match losing streak. Kristen Chapman (So., Jourdanton) led the Rattlers with six total blocks, while Adrianna Keys (So., San Antonio) had six kills and four blocks against the Dust devils. On Saturday the Lady Rattlers fell to St. Edwards University as they defeated the Rattlers, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21. With the loss, the Rattlers are now 4-17 overall and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play this season. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday, Oct. 16 when they host the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at 7 p.m. and Dallas Baptist Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. in Bill Greehey Arena.

At the Incarnate Word Invitational Marcey Morales (Sr., Lytle) finished the five-kilometer course in 22 minutes 38 seconds and came in 23rd overall for the cross country team. The second Rattler to cross the finish line was Ariel Ornales (Fr., Fort Worth), who had a time of 22:58. Amy Crissman (Sr., San Antonio) was third with a 25:13, Kristyn Mathewson (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) had a time of 25:42 to finish fourth among Rattler runners helping St. Mary’s to an eighth place finish as a team. You can catch the Rattlers Oct. 24 at the Heartland Conference Championship in Dallas.

The St. Mary's men’s soccer team were off this week, but are heading out on the road this week to take on the University of the Incarnate Word on Wednesday Oct. 14 and St. Edwards University Oct. 16. The Rattlers will wrap up the week on Sunday Oct. 18 when they head upstate to face 19th-ranked Midwestern State University.
