St. Mary´s Women´s Soccer Wins First Game of 2009 Season

SAN ANTONIO—Emilie Snelson scored the first two goals of her Rattler career, helping St. Mary’s University to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. The volleyball team suffered its second straight loss in five sets, falling 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 15-10, against Dallas Baptist University.

The Rattler soccer team fell behind early against UTPB, 1-0, when Kaylen Gerkey took a pass and blasted a shot from 20 yards out to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. But the Rattlers responded quickly when Snelson (So., Fairview) found the back of the net in the 22nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. Just two minutes later Melinda Gentry (Jr., Plano) gave the Rattlers the lead, lofting a shot over the goalkeeper’s head to make the score 2-1. The goal was Gentry’s team-leading third of the season and second in as many games. Snelson then iced the game in the 62nd minute taking a throw-in and putting the ball into the net for the final margin.

Defensively Mari Edwards (Fr., Apex, N.C.) had a stellar day in net, making 14 saves – just one off the school record of 15 set by Roxie Carrasco (So., El Paso).

With the win, the Rattlers improved to 1-7-1 overall and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play this season, while UTPB fell to 2-7, 0-3. St. Mary’s will return to action on Oct. 2 when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman University in a Heartland Conference matchup at 7 p.m.

For the volleyball team, their frustrating road trip continued as they took a two sets to one lead, but couldn’t hold on in the five-set loss. Katelyn Kershner (Jr., San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 17 kills and 20 digs, while Kirsten Chapman (So., Jourdanton) added 12 kills. Sondra Cui (So., Schertz) had 23 assists and 18 digs as well in the loss. As a team the Rattlers had 46 kills, but 32 attack errors. Meanwhile, DBU had 65 kills against 38 attack errors.

With the loss, the Rattlers fell to 3-12 overall and 2-2 in Heartland Conference play. DBU improved to 8-7, 2-2. St. Mary’s will stay on the road to face cross-town rival the University of the Incarnate Word on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.
