Am I required to purchase a computer through St. Mary's?
Students entering in fall 2009 are the first to be able to select their own notebook computer from any vendor. You do not have to purchase a prescribed unit through St. Mary's.

What software is available to me through the University?
For those students with Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft XP Professional SP3, or Apple Mac OS X operating systems, we offer the Microsoft Office Professional suite and TrendMicro anti-virus with free upgrades while you are enrolled at St. Mary's. Microsoft Office may be obtained at the University Bookstore for a nominal charge to cover the cost of the official media. TrendMicro will be available for download through Gateway, the St. Mary's University portal.

Where is wireless service available and how do I connect?
Wireless service is located in every building on campus including residence hall lounges. An ITS FAQ document and instructional video, Get Connected, will be provided via Gateway (the St. Mary's portal) to help you connect. For more information regarding St. Mary's wireless service and other campus technology-related issues, contact the ITS Help Desk at (210) 431-4357.

What if I experience computer problems and need help?
You'll simply contact our on-campus ITS Help Desk and a representative will assist you with connectivity and usage of University technology resources or other minor software issues. The ITS Help Desk personnel can also answer questions or help guide you when it is time to deal with your system vendor for hardware or other warranty repairs. The St. Mary's ITS Help Desk is a certified Dell Warranty Service provider and will be able to provide on-site hardware repairs for most Dell systems.

What happens if I change my major?
As long as you purchase a notebook computer that meets the recommended specifications, you will be able to meet your course requirements regardless of your major.
