March 2005 AccoladesSt. Mary’s University was recognized for the 2004 National Youth Sports Program Compliance Award. The award was given to institutions that met all of the 93 federal guidelines and earned other project enhancement points. The NYSP staff at the University earned enhancement points in programming activities and educational enrichment courses, and by providing community service activities for program participants. H. Palmer Hall, Ph.D., Blume Library, will be inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters on April 30. The Texas Institute of Letters, founded in 1936 by J. Frank Dobie, Walter Webb, and other journalists, scholars and poets, promotes and recognizes distinctive literary achievement in Texas. Hall, director of the Blume Library, is co-editor and director of Pecan Grove Press. He teaches English at St. Mary’s and has had his stories, poems, and essays appear in various literary magazines, including Ascent, North American Review, The Texas Review, The Florida Review, Briar Cliff Review and many others. Books include: “The Librarian in the University,” “A Measured Response,” “From the Periphery: Poems and Essays,” “Deep Thicket & Still Waters,” and “Reflections on Publishing, Writing and Other Things.” Suzanne Petrusch, Enrollment Management, authored a chapter in “Best Technology Practices in Higher Education,” which was edited by Les Lloyd and published by Information Today Inc. TheRev. George Montague, S.M., theology, participated in a panel discussion on “Does the Bible Promote Violence” at Texas State University in San Marcos on March 8. St. Mary’s President Emeritus, the Rev. John A. Leies, S.M., S.Th.D., is co-author of “Handbook on Critical Life Issues,” published by the National Catholic Bioethics Center. The book discusses major life issues of the day, such as the law and abortion, stem cell research, organ transplants, suicide, assisted suicide, and euthanasia, among others, and offers a moral evaluation of the issues from the standpoint of the teachings of the Catholic church. |
