January 2005 Accolades

Jacqueline Dansby, Ph.D., Upward Bound, has been selected by the Alamo Chamber of Commerce to serve on the 2004-2005 Advisory Committee for the African American Leadership Institute.

Milo Colton, Ph.D., criminal justice/criminology, has published several articles this year, including “American Indian Holocaust in Texas,” in IKCE WICASTA: The Common People Journal, Spring 2004; “American Indian Rebirth in Texas” and “Are Military Tribunals Fair? Ask the Dakota Nation,” in IKCE WICASTA: The Common People Journal, Summer 2004; and “Affirmative Action and the Police: Lessons from Indian Country,” in the Texas Police Journal, June 2004.

Colton also offered commentary titled, “Personality Highlight (Commentary Against the Death Penalty for Juveniles),” in Dean J. Champion’s 2005 fourth edition of “Corrections in the United States: A Contemporary Perspective.”

Diane Gonzales Bertrand, English, received the 2004 Best Bilingual Award at the Latino Family Book Festival in Houston last October for her book, “The Empanadas That Abuela Made.” Bertrand received the award from Arte Publico Press.

An article by Richard S. Pressman, Ph.D., English, “Is There a Future for the ‘Heath Anthology’ in the Neoliberal State?” was reprinted in “On Anthologies: Politics and Pedagogy” earlier this year.

Andrew Hill, Service Learning Center, co-presented “Service Learning and Study Abroad: Avoiding the Missionary Tendency” at the 2004 Conference on International Education Exchange (CIEE) held in November in Santa Fe, N.M. The panel presentation addressed the need for service learning classes to stress academic content, rather than the accompanying social good of the service performed in international education programs. He presented the topic alongside colleagues from the Foundation for International Education, Elon College and Georgetown University.

Hill also co-presented on the subject of service learning and study abroad at the joint conference of the National Society for Experiential Education and the International Consortium for Experiential Learning on Oct. 1 in Miami.

Norma Guerra Gaier, Career Services, presented “How Career Centers Can Assist Human Resource Professionals” at the San Antonio Human Resource Management Assocaition monthly meeting in November. Gaier offered valuable information regarding the numerous resources available to human resource professionals through university and college career centers.

Dean of Students Karen Johnson and Vicki Williams, Ph.D., Judicial Affairs and Community Development, recently presented “Student Social Conduct and Behaviors: A Judicial and Ministry Approach” at the Catholic Campus Ministers National Meeting in San Antonio.

Brother Robert Wood, S.M., St. Mary’s archivist, will receive the San Antonio Conservation Society Foundation’s 2005 Publication Award for “Life in Laredo: A Documentary History from the Laredo Archives,” which was published last year.
