Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin Chinese is a language spoken by almost a quarter of the world’s population, and it the most-spoken language in the world. It is spoken in the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China in Taiwan, and in important "Overseas Chinese" communities throughout Southeast Asia and the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina.
The United States also has an important Chinese American population consisting of several generations of immigrants. It was

Chinese labor that built most of the railroads in the American west. Chinese Americans are today among the most highly educated populations in the United States, and they occupy important positions in all professional fields. As commercial, political and cultural relations between the US and China strengthen, the Chinese language becomes even more important.
All majors are invited to participate in the language offering. For further information, please contact the Department of Languages at ebueno@stmarytx.edu.
